lots of money and top grades for a start- UBC is one of the most competitive universities in canada, and international fees are substantially higher than resident tuition.

apart from that, you will need the equivalent to a 4-year degree in the arts or sciences, you may receive advanced standing if this is in landscape architecture rather than a different field

if you’re going to hypothetically rename our profession, i think Exterior Architect is a far more suitable title for what landscape architects do.

my office has recently begun using artlantis for rendering sketchup models. it takes a while to learn the limitations and modelling techniques (i’ve just learned to make models as simple as possible, and add details through testures and shaders), however the results can be quite stunning. artlantis also supports revit and vectorworks.

if you are looking for a full 3d modelling/rendering/animation package, modo is supposed to be the best value around. it is developed by the original developers of lightwave 3d, and is around $800.

also just want to add the 3d object imports into photoshop extended cs4 add a whole range of new possibilties

why not use parallels for autocad and other non-OS X native software, and run the native versions of CS4/SketchUp etc on your Mac OS. this prevents having to reboot every time you want to switch apps, and having a separate disk partition to ‘share’ files between the operating systems. well worth the price of parallels imo

You need permission. If you were an unpaid intern, any firm should be more than willing to let you show the work you completed there to land a position. But you may be stepping on toes especially if you are using work you completed by being paid by one company to get a job with another. There is also the issue of confidentiality- some project work may not be able to be shared legally until well after the job is complete. Never hurts to ask, and if they deny you the use of the work you completed for selfish reasons and not legal, it’s your right to stomp them toes.

30 day demo on adobe.com. The 3d import is really cool since you can drop in, rotate, and paint an model is a large number of formats. It wouldn’t make sense to save it as a model since you can’t edit the model from Photoshop, but I imagine there is a way to save your textures (the painting seems to work like Zbrush).

PS CS4 Extended also has some really cool image capablities such as measuring, counting, and smart stretch/scaling (for example you can widen a landscape without stretching people that are in the image).

the basic creative suites costs the same as 2-3 apps, so if you intend on branching out at all, it is worth the investment

Re: It seems that the The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires structures over 500 feet to be painted orange or white.

Are there really wind turbines more than 500 feet tall?

sketching is actually something that can be learned fairly easily. a lot of people think that you need to be born with artistic skill in order to be able to sketch, however, with the proper instruction you can learn the skill just like a software program or an instrument. check out mike lin’s workshops at beloose.com

I have also used LandF/X and have been happy with the results in the irrigation portion, however I found it difficult to switch between imperial and metric units, and it is not possible to combine the two in the irrigation calculations (i.e. PSI with millimeter pipe)
