Debbie, I think I would suggest not trying to show the whole thing at a readable scale. If your theme is weaving the community, then use your main watershed plan graphic to represent this idea through simple bold graphics and rendering (concepts don’t need to show too much detail, its an idea, not a design). I think this could easily be…[Read more]

I would really love to go, but it doesn’t look like it is in the cards this year. Anyone know where IFLA is headed to in 2010

Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Landscape Architecture magazine wants to know: How are you coping with the recession? in the forum RESEARCH 15 years, 8 months ago
Although I have been planning this since before the recession got into full swing, I will be coping with the recession by doing some traveling. My girlfriend and I have been saving up to go travel for 10 months through Central and South America starting this June. I am hoping to do some focused observation throughout my travels somehow related to…[Read more]

Has anyone read Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jacke? A couple of my coworkers went to a seminar on the subject and found it to be very interesting. I have not had a chance to read too much of it yet (its a little dense), but from what I gather, the basic idea is that by creating Edible Forest Gardens, your yield can be much greater vs. the amount…[Read more]

I am a big fan of the website portfolio. I know that during my day I spend a decent amount of time looking through websites, and feel very comfortable with them. I love to look through other LA and Architecture firms websites for inspiration. In the same way…I would probably take more time to look through a website portfolio, than a pdf or…[Read more]

wow…talk about your heated debate!
Here a couple thoughts I have about the stimulus package:
1) I think one of the goals of this stimulus package (and this administration) is to help transition our economy from a commodity based economy to a service based economy. Clearly the last system was a ticking time bomb. Economists thought that the…[Read more]

I would also put in a vote for Germany. I think Atelier Dreiseitl is doing some really innovative work, especially using water in the landscape. http://www.dreiseitl.de/

Nick, I am not sure if this will relate to your situation, but I thought I should share it anyway. I had my first real design studio the first semester of my sophomore year. I thought I was doing some really cool design work in it, but I never really got that feeling from my professor. She would always ask me questions about my design and my…[Read more]

This image below was taken in Freiburg, Germany which was one of my favorite cities in Europe. They had a similar situation as Melbourne it sounds like, where they had designated areas for tagging, and to take it one step further, kids had to get a permit (which was free) before they could tag. It was really successful. All of the tunnels that go…[Read more]

Also, in addition to some of the landscape highlights, I would highly recommend going to the Bridgeport Brewing Company. If you go in around back there is a small office, and if you peek your head inside and talk to the guy in there (i forget his name), he might give you a free tour of the plant. In addition to having awesome beer, they also have…[Read more]

Thank you, Laura, for bringing those questions on sustainable and sustainable sites out of the closet. I’d like to put forward two points that are hard to find in common discussions of sustainability.
1. The word sustainable needs to be unbundled by landscape architects. It has only been in our planning vocabulary since Gros Brundtland’s 1987…[Read more]

Laura,
You have raised some great questions that the folks working on the Sustainable Sites Initiative are indeed grappling with.1. Is it possible to design a sustainable site?
Clearly it depends on how we define sustainable. You have raised a good point that we have not specifically defined “sustainability” yet (other than via the definition…[Read more] - Load More
