Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Studio Project leads to a larger question in the forum EDUCATION 13 years, 1 month ago
Jason, I actually worked on a project in my junior studio very much related to this at the University of Maryland. It was called Fort Circle Park, and the intent was to create a 22 mile greenway connecting all of the existing forts still on NPS property, and showing where NPS should try to acquire more land through some envisioning site design. I…[Read more]

Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Professional Boundaries for Landscape Contractors in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 1 month ago
Heather, I disagree. It sounds to me like the contractor pretty clearly overstepped his bounds. He was brought in to a job (by the designer) to do a scope of work…and then talked to the client (behind the designers back) about doing additional work. If the contractor felt that they could do lighting as well..then he shouldhave mentioned that to…[Read more]

I think you had it right when you said this:
but ultimately it comes down to whether I would prefer to design predominantly indoor or outdoor spaces.
I know a lot of people on here are concerned about the job market, and most of them with good reason, but I think it is very short sited to base a decision on what you want to do with the rest of…[Read more]

Jason, I actually got the idea for the tree species from Paley Park, however Im trying to show a space closer in size to the actual courtyard in the project. Although Paley Park is small…it’s not quite small enough for this. Thanks though!

Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Cost benefit analysis of attending the ASLA 2011 Meeting for first-year MLA students in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
D,
I would recommend going to the conference if you can swing it financially. Over the years I have made some really great contacts at the conference and also been inspired by some of the lectures. As a first year MLA student…it could be a great way to see the breadth of work this field has to offer. However, if money is really an issue, and you…[Read more] -
Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Anybody get a bulk discount on Prozac? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 4 months ago
This is interesting, because this is not at all the atmosphere I am experiencing here in MD. In just the past year every LA friend I had who was looking for a job has found one. I know 3 companies that just started or broke off other firms (including the one I work for), and I have several friends who just in the past month have changed jobs…[Read more]

Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Visiting firms when you're not looking for a job in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
I think saying “most firms” have confidential projects pinned up is a bit of a stretch. I am sure most firms would be glad to show you around. Finding a contact might not be a bad idea though. If you don’t already have a friend working for one of the firms you are interested in…maybe you could find someone through Land8. Good luck!

Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Edging? in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 13 years, 7 months ago
Seems like this product by Permloc might be an option:http://www.permaloc.com/products/onyx.html
Also, their aluminum edging has a beaded top that makes them significantly less sharp than steel edging. -

Kevin J. Gaughan replied to the topic Landscape architecutre in the USA and other places in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 10 months ago
I’ll voice some praise. I think the US is a great place to be a landscape architect. Sure we have some identity issues here…but I have done enough traveling to realize that that is the case pretty much anywhere. I work for a small firm which focuses mostly on high end residential design, and we work with some fantastic architects who really do…[Read more]

Thanks Mark. Do you have experience using this product? If so, about how long did it take for it to decompose? Do you think it would be possible to mulch overtop of it (for aesthetic reasons)? I am in zone 6b.
