nca replied to the topic What are some favorite design websites? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
Most of my favorite design websites are non-design related websites like this one:

I also really like these:
http://www.terrain-urbanism.com and

Well, I think you’re comparing apple to oranges..or perhaps lemons so to speak 😉
Wal Mart makes it’s money wholesaling other people products and innovation..Apple is an ideas company essentially making money from innovation and design. I think the left and right equally liek apple for it’s seeming commitment to quality and innovation.

It kind of reminds me of Le Corbusier’s vision for urban planning in the early part of the 20th century, which later morphed into the philosophical foundation for the design of housing projects and strip malls. You could say that this is a modern interpretation of corbusier’s vision of tall buildings in park-like settings.

I dont think so..I think the concept is a statement, so much so perhaps that if you added little donuts or spokes or whatever it would seem contrived. I just dont think thats what they had in mind and steve jobs never mentioned that in his presentation. I would also argue that planting trees as theyre proposed would be terribly wasteful if they…[Read more]

“twice the rate..?” Try 3-4x the rate for me and some of my colleagues. Bigger firms can throw more manpower at large projects but I have found that they really cant even compete for small projects in many cases. The larger projects with the manpower can be kind of a drag as a designer to work on as there tends to be a circuitous line of…[Read more]

Yeah, I’m getting kind of tired of hearing how the building ‘looks like a space ship landed..’ and that’s supposed to be a good thing..see: LAM’s article last month on Holl and Van Valkenburgh’s Whitney Water Purification Facility, most of Ghery’s projects, and this.
In the last plan graphic in Jason’s link you can see that their neighbors to…[Read more] -

Watch the video if you want to watch town council ask some of the dumbest questions on earth..seriously.
I like the overall concept, though I wonder if the community wouldn’t benefit more from a campus less self-contained..it sounds a little like Area 51, and although that’s what they may be going for theoretically, in practice I wonder if it…[Read more] -

Did you pay someone to create the ad/image for you?

My thoughts on the ad–Which I think is fairly effective, good for you for taking the inititive..
1. Personally, I think the golden ration/fibonacci spiral thing is kind of a cliche in the design world. I’d like to see another image that speaks directly to your work and what sets it apart.
2. Your email address..you have a website but no e…[Read more] -
nca replied to the topic What Graduate Degree would you recommend as the best complement to an Undergrad in Landscape Architecture? Pros and Cons? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
Based on some of the degree changes I’ve been hearing about lately I can only conclude that there are probably a lot of people in LA for the wrong reasons.
Architecture? Really? -

It’s true, and I still don’t really get it.

Meta-tags–The client needs to tell the web designer specifically what words to enter as part of the code on their website. This is probably the biggest loophole out there and is, in my opinion, deceptive.

I agree that the course probably isnt really worth it, but for different reasons.
1. I actually think a 2 week course is overkill. The interface and operations between adobe products is fairly intuitive once you’ve learned the basics of one.
2. When in doubt, realize that you can do almost ANYTHING in photoshop (or at least fake it).

I am on the side that thinks playground equipment (and many public spaces) are too safe, sanitized spaces leaving little room for imagination.
I dont know about all the psycho-babble..there may very well be long term psychological consequences to ‘hyper-safe’ playgrounds, but I guess my point is that there are more evident ways in which we can…[Read more] -

I’ve been using Illustrator to generate ‘hard lined’ sketches for conceptual design for a while now. SOme projects I have found lend themselves well to this technique, specifically when dealing with very specific geometry like very gentle arcs or blocks, like ballfields, or parking lots.
I almost always work out concepts on paper first, then…[Read more] -

Pretty ridiculous, but I think there’s also a touch of sensationalism. She won’t get jail time if found guilty I’m sure. And did she ‘elect’ to be tried before a jury??

I would agree with one caveat–I think it is difficult, if not impossible for true ‘entry levels’ to find jobs as well as more experienced ‘middle management’ types.
I’m working part time at a large form now and see this structure. The ‘skeleton crew’ staff is comosed mostly of ‘junior levels’ wqith say 3-6 years experience and a few partners o…[Read more] -
