I’m not sure a handful of projects qualifies as ‘building like a beaver,’ but whatever floats your fresh kills.

Nice write-up.
Reading archinect really puts things in perspective in terms of the job market and who’s out there doing what. I like how the interviewee mentions the connection between architecture and farming or landscape as I interpret it. Perhaps some of us could look at this as a commentary on the true future of landscape architecture as it…[Read more] -

Have you considered that it may not be the rendering?
We had an instructor that used to tell us to consider the design when we just cant get the rendering to look ‘right.’ Also, composition is important. Your composition looks pretty rigid. Is this really the ideal view of your design? -

Sounds like your employer is undercutting and/or overpromising by mistreating their employees. I’m sure this is fairly common. It will not last and is a truly an unsustainable way to run a business.
I would consider having a talk with your boss or manager. If you sont get the answers your hoping for I wouldnt be afraid to look elsewhere for…[Read more] -

In Colorado you can perform ‘landscape design’ as long as you dont cal yourself a ‘Landscape Architect.’
Public work requires a stamp, but even that said it isn’t ‘illegal’ for a landscape designer to design a public landscape. They just cant stamp the construction docs, so it often makes more sense for a client to hire the person who can…[Read more] -

Ryan,
That’s cool. You’re situation sounds eerily similar to mine–one shared car, 45 minute commute (now 3 hours plus for me if I were to go into the office), working in casual clothes, etc.
I think my specific situation is somewhat unique in that I am far from my employers office, but I could see how a similar situation could work well for o…[Read more] -

I agree and feel for you siuation, but I also think a lot of the responsibility lies on the side of the employee in terms of setting the standard for compensation–with so many entry levels willing to work for literally nothing, more experienced professionals naturally think their time and effort is worth less. If the labor market doesnt ‘…[Read more]

I don’t necessarily agree that ‘anyone with a BLA/MLA should be granted the right to call themselves a Landscape Architect.’
I think a lot of us would agree that we learned far more about the practice and craft in the years after graduation than we did in the classroom.
Personally, I feel offended if a person with no degree calls themself a L…[Read more] -

I asked a very similar question here recently, so I’d like to know what’s going on out there as well.
As far as I can tell in terms of compensation, it’s all across the boards. New grads with little or no experience are getting paid very well in some regions, while others with lots of experience and skill are making low hourly wages.
In the p…[Read more] -

I agree they can be unsightly and even damaging to the tree, but I was also under the impression that in addition to providing some safety from the trimmers and mowers the rings allowed the tree loose medium around the ‘crown’ area where the trunk meets the root zone to breath as this is where the majority of gas exchange occurs. Also allowing the…[Read more]

I dont know if you ruffled any egos, but fyi landscaping is a little different than landscape architecture. Most of the members here are involved in more design-oriented businesses. You might want to check : http://www.groundtradesxchange.com to find more people with landscaping businesses.

Coming from someone in the midst of buying a new car I can say that is very good advice on negotiating..
I might add on the last point..”They may be willing to pay you 43 but you get timid and say 38…guess what you get 38.”
..maybe more like guess what, you get 36. -

I was sort of giving you a hard time on purpose because you’re sort of ‘spamming’ the message board with a sort of off topic discussion.
