I think what’s been happening in design-build and what tends to be happening more frequently now in design-only firms is a bit different.
When I was in design-build there were always companies willing to do lots of free work to land the install. This is sort of what led me to go back to school and pursue a design-only career. I often did free…[Read more]

I agree that I dont think it matters how talented or skilled a person is. I know people with zero skill or work ethic and great job security at outstanding firms, and I know extremely talented, passionate, hard-working people who should be working unemployed and floundering.
Someone said in another post that this has been more akin to musical…[Read more]

I worked on a three year old (when I started my BSLA in 2004) Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and 3×5 Wacom Graphire tablet.
My former program recommended Mac’s and I already had a PC, fortunately. I’m not a computer person per se, but I think I do OK digital work.
My point is that just like anything else having all the fanciest tools still can’t…[Read more]

We need more big egos in LA, but more importantly we need more big doers in my opinion. Several ‘High End’ firms we see in LA Mag weekely are doing the object thing, but I think they’re going in the wrong direction–thats why arch like sanaa just go ahead and skip the landscape.
I think the profession is quickly evolving. There was a time or a…[Read more]

Agreed.

I’m not sure many cities do give away GIS data, but it’s not uncommon in my experience to ask nicely an dget free data for nonprofit/academic purposes. GISdatadepot.com and the USGS Seamless map server sites have a plethora of free data including demographics and dems.
Like I said before, if I wasnt at working full time I’d pursue this a lot more…[Read more]

It is not polarizing. Everyone always jumps to the conclusion that if you don’t make these things your number one priority, you are completely devoid of any of these values which is not the case at all. These are weighted values in every project. Some people do are philosophically predisposed to have an inability to adjust to the weighted values…[Read more]

Doesn’t the ‘great time to go back to school’ idea really just delay the inevitable? There still will not be enough work to go around. I agree with some of the sentiments above regarding a possible misconception with what the profession really is beyond academia…just not to the extreme that I think Andrew perceives.

I generally agree.
To add to that, we could use some ‘design/enviro-sympathetic’ people in lawmaking, politics, and teaching.

They will not tell you that in school and may lead you to a mindset that the profession is all about you saving the environment and society. While there are opportunities to excercise those pursuits, there are far more opportunities to design the land to effectively implement the goals of the people who have a project that they need done to serve…[Read more]

It would be great to get some base information and either post this publically, or share individually to discuss the potential scope and feasibility and get some ideas flowing. It would be great to get a GIS wiz involved..

I think what’s happening in Detroit right now exemplifies exactly the ideals many of the members here have been discussing.
The film made me wish I was still a student or had a little more time to investigate and present some solutions.

Eddie George, the NFL player graduated from the with a BLA.
I’ve met some good people from that program over the past few years. From what I hear it’s a good program. I’m not sure if they’re breaking any new ground or what though..

Theres no formula or science to it in my experience Zach.
If you havent already, check out Frank Ghery’s film by Sidney Pollack ‘Sketches of Frank Ghery.’ Pollack, a great directir, and Ghery, a great architect talk at one point in the film about the process of ‘becoming’ what you do. Pollack talks about ‘pretending’ to be a director until waking…[Read more]

I find it useful mainly for diagramming and also layout and labeling.
Where it lacks, other cs software makes up for, which is probably why photoshop and indesign are what they are. Its a good program.

Jon,
Yes, you can ‘edit’ an album. You can upload pictures first, then click and drag them into the album you choose from your gallery or you can choose the album you want the images added to in the drop down menu on the upload page.
