I didn’t know this was happening with EDAW, but I have heard of the same thing happening with EDSA…It’s bizzaro.

wow…I didn’t even check the site, just heard rumblings. I know alot of folks were talking about this just after the merger, but I didn’t think many took it very seriously, as I certainly didn’t.
Strange…

I would actually echo what Andrew stated in the first part of his reply. I’m also not sure if this issue isn’t merely a diversion from the more important and meaningful issues regarding the practice.
I’m not sure where landscape architects fit into ‘office greening’ when our palette is primarily outdoors. Also, I would agree that our work,…[Read more]

I think this “awareness” may happen on it’s own, though I think Landscape Architecture profession may be in need of a overhaul with regard to the type of work we pursue and project roles. Ultimately, this probably hinges on the type and quality of education and the direction of those at the forefront of the profession currently. In my opinion,…[Read more]

You really can’t show enought detail with 8 or even 4 40×32″ boards?? That seems like an aweful lot of detail. Maybe I’m misunderstanding your dilemma.

This almost sounds familiar to me as if I’ve seen something like this before, but I can’t place where.
I’m sure someone here will have a suggestion..

Lawrence-
This is a studio project I’m trying to tackle virtually on my own with little program or requirements. I can make it all a park if I want or I can develop a more equitable program of building development, public space, commerce, culture, and community.
I have been in touch with the town planner who is in the midst of conducting a…[Read more]

Thanks Chad,
I hope I’m not coming off the wrong way..maybe I should check my angst haha..
It’s encouraging to know that, as I understand, the process is always organic and that there is not necessarily any formula. I’m sure you’re right that this is more a process in understanding how my own mind works with the marginal benefit of discovering a…[Read more]

Thanks Dave.
I’m trying not to be so concerned with whatever the end product comes out to be as I am in learning a process or approach to tackling projects of this magnitude and larger. I would like the final plan, however to be a long(er) range vision for a rapidly growing community. If that, by definition, is “pie in the sky,” so be it.

On a bit of a side note, I wonder how many LA professors out there are Registered Landscape Architects? To that end, I wonder what, if any, difference it would/does make in our education? How is it in architecture programs? Are the professors generally registered architects?

I pretty much agree with Brian, though I do know of some firms that DO differentiate in terms of pay scalein regard to whether the candidate holds a bachelors or masters. One thing I think that is true across the boards is the portfolio work will in most cases out shine where your degree is from. Most entry levels enter firms on the “production”…[Read more]

While I agree, I think there may be alot more worth keeping from the time preceding the last 50 years, at least in regard to land development and design. I also don’t understand why we shoot ourselves in the foot and appeal to the kind of pragmatism that seems to have gotten us here in the first place time after time.

I wonder if an option could somehow be introduced to “mask” your identity when posting in discussions? I have been increasingly concerned with this as well. I also wonder if the discussion boards could/should be consolidated and made more accessible and visible from the home page to promote more active discussion. It seems like every discussion…[Read more]

Maybe just like every other industry and aspect of our former society as we knew it the economic downturn will serve to reshape and provide stimulus for new startups based on the structure and ideals many of us prefer with business models more akin to design and collaboration rather than investment banking.

I do agree also though that there is a point where it comes down to your bottom line as an owner. Owners are not necessarily in business to give people jobs, theyre primarily in business to make a profit. I just think from a business ethical standpoint there should be at least be a process that precedes layoffs such as cutting hours, benefits,…[Read more]

I think you may have misinterpreted my tone…I didn’t intend to come off as combative. I agree with most of what you stated. In response to your quaestion, ” ..what business actions should become more transparent.?…” I didn’t intend to imply that literal business actions like financial statements should be available firm wide…[Read more]

Someone said earlier the quality of the firm correlates directly to the quality of its staff. You’re right Andrew there are alot of firms out there and no one is telling us we have to work for this one or that one, besides at least our professors. We do have the freedom to choose. With that in mind, perhaps it’s not necessarily in the best…[Read more]

Charles,
For what it’s worth coming from an entry level I commend you for taking extended measures to maintain your staff and stay afloat. I can only imagine the level of gratitude your employees must feel and dedication they will likely present if/when things turn around.
