Thanks for posting this interesting information. I wish I could attend the conference. We had a similar challenge when restoring and repurposing a prison that was transferrred to our agency. It is a complicated development of private/public deelopment that seems to be working well for our community.

Pat S. Rosend replied to the topic who likes the new layout? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years ago
I have tried, but I don’t like it either. It took me three times visiting to figure out where the forum was. I think that is one one of the best parts of the site. It has really been minimized, to the site’s detriment IMHO.

The problem arises if you need to do a WL install and a meter. In my county a 3′ water meter is $80,000. Plus the cost of the line work itself.

The park plan has outdoor event space and small gathering spaces around the perimeter. It has a playgorund area and a trail network.

I am going to disagree a bit with you here. Parks serve many roles. not all have recreation opportunities. Many parks serve other functions. I think it is the term park that brings a certain image to mind.
It is true that the public thinks of parks as places to go do something in, but our parks serve many other purposes. -

Thanks for the link.
My feeling is that this is a park designed for passive recreation. IMHO the author of the piece is speaking to a different type of park use, a more active use. This park serves a different purpose. I don’t know if I would call it a fake environment. We try to teach where and when we can. What is hard to evaluate is how t…[Read more] -

Remember…
Playgrounds are for kids not adults. Kids really have different interests, likes and needs from adults in outdoor spaces. Not saying the other stuff isn’t interesting, it is, but just sayin’ -

Pat S. Rosend replied to the topic Rise & Fall of LA Firms: Did Company Greed Kill Our Jobs? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
A 2x multiple on employees is not being greedy. That is going to barely cover your overhead and make a small profit. When I was in design build, we had a minimum 3x mulitple for costs to billing. 4x was optimum.

The profession should mandate a 10 year license limit. Everyone has to retake the exam after holding the RLA for 10 yrs.
Nooooo. No more testing. It is really not that hard to do this job folks. Even Dr’s don’t have to retake their boards. -

I think an MBA in Economics is a great idea. You will find it of value whether you are an LA or not. Many LA’s would benefit from business/economic knowledge.
I left the field for about 7 years. I eventually came back, because the field I went into, airline corporate and agency sales, went into a tailspin after 9-11 and I couldn’t get a job…[Read more] -

I don’t like it myself. Very pretentious and depressing. -

In many areas Crape Myrtles are Shrubs and not trees. The inspectors should know better. Shame.

I just hope that after you learn Autocad, you don’t get hired by a Microstation shop. (surprise!)

Good points. I think having knowledge and experience drafting is a better use in learning what Autocad can do for you and how you should use it.

Good Luck with your search. I work for a Park Authority also and always worry about stability. We are lucky in that politics drives park openeings, so our group (planning and development) always has plenty to do. We are operating at almost half staff these days. Operations has been decimated.
The other half of our group is paid for by bond funds,…[Read more] -
