toby replied to the topic Virtual Building project? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years ago
It’s one of those ‘will build to suit’ developer things. They show a pretty pic on the RE billboard: a building that has been tentatively approved of by the city building dept.
The outside is completed to meet the code requirements (FARs, setbacks, access, parking, mechanical, utility, landscape, etc.), while the non load bearing interior walls…[Read more] -

Good choice. I was going to mention this one, but stuff got in the way of getting back to the interweb.
The pic is a nice working for the vine, but the website you found it on is a bit odd.

toby replied to the topic Do your clients know what landscaping costs in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years ago
“…I’m never the bad guy.”
I’m the opposite.
I’m shaking my head ‘no’ before the potential client can finish the question about a water feature. And I’m doing it to save myself (and them, but mostly myself) the frustration of a boondogle that will be non-functioning within two years.
I spent the first 17 years after graduating doing m…[Read more] -

Biased response – I am an Ohio State University grad (’91), and I work with a few (my boss is one) of Cal Poly LAs…what a difference in education. The curriculum at OSU was heavy on design (not science) with the usual plant id courses while CalPoly seemed to be more in the ‘sustainibility’ area and less of the engineering side of de…[Read more]

“…going to make clear to the client to only have a high end tree care company with Certified Arborist prune this tree over the years and to have it pruned to keep it’s natural shape and form…”
That will work as long as EVERYBODY knows this. What happens when an uninformed maintenance worker hacks at it, or the current homeowner moves out ?

or at least the classes that can help you run a business – your own or as part of one. Accounting and time management and tax law and sales/contracts and insurance/liability and all that other stuff really does matter.

toby replied to the topic In Case of Emergency- What if this Tag-Team Actually Wins ? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
My opinions can at times be diametrically opposed from each other, and I know this about myself. I do not however want others to use them against me, so I tend to stay on the quiet side of the conversation.
I began a number of relplies to statements made in this thread, but deleted them when I realized they were (a) pushing the subject further…[Read more] -

I am going to stand by my original statement and the first comment made to this thread…”My opinion is that this is not the place for this subject.”
I was not the least bit surprised by the route the thread took. It was typical of any forum that begins with a ‘loaded’ question: it went off route. I would say that behavior here was typical of wh…[Read more] -

I certainly don’t mind contributing opinion; it’s what I know best. -

To take RH’s comment “Not everything is possible with plants” further, are you preparing anything to show the client that this design element is in fact not possible.
Who’s going to get sued when it fails ?

LP, do see what you started ? The group on Land8 is not like that on Archinect, and some appear to be too easily offended.
And if anyone thinks my opinionated statement is directed at you, it probably is. Hey!

toby replied to the topic Community: The Future of Sustainability in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 12 years, 2 months ago
You can’t have sustainable as long as somebody is able to bring in cheaper (in the short run) alternatives. Try and legislate it and you’ll get calls for your head on the chopping block.
In an effort to get a lively response, I’ll go so far as to say ‘sustainable’ is impossible to achieve.

You mention “soil”…what’s the mix ? Does it break down over time ? What is your irrigation ?

My opinion is that this is not the place for this subject.
That said…this country has the potential to suffer greatly because ‘low information’ and the far worse ‘information averse’ voters have been convinced to vote against their own interest.

Did you get your results yesterday or today about passing C/E ? Heard they had a really high passing rate.
DO NOT WAIT for LATC to send you anything. If you signed up first thru LATC, then they should get notification that you passed. If you have to call, wait a week or two and call until somebody picks up. Don’t leave a message, as…[Read more] -
