Jason, Wytold is harping on his talking point, “public-private” NOT market based only. Market based only to me would mean exclusively private, right? That is NOT what Wytolds tired ‘idea’ is all about.. He’s been saying that for a while, public-private, public private, and to that I say, yawn, so what else is new?
to the prefurbia concept of pr…[Read more] -

Edna, my favorite (deceased ) designer, Ed Bye, A.E. Bye, was known for his horse farms – but more for the beauty than practicality – the horses had air conditioned stalls, 20×20, so you can imagine the type of horseflesh he designed for. the dry-laid retaining walls and stone drinking trough – gorgeous! Worth looking at – his picture book of his…[Read more]

IMHO the incompetence this guy is detecting in graduates is due to emphasis on computers and other toys, which allow one to produce incredible looking plans that are completely empty of thought….

chad, do you realize that these tax cuts that you are so enthusiastic about have been in place for ten years – so this will be business as usual. Bush drove the economy into the ground with his anti-regulatory policies and the tax cuts and the unfunded war. Clinton helped with the repeal of Glass-steagall..

here’s Nouriel Roubini, one of my favorite economists, really interesting if you ever catch him on C-span or Charlie Rose
“So, in conclusion the verdict from history and empirical evidence is quite clear. Supply side economics is “voodoo economics”. Reductions in tax rates (starting from initial moderate tax rate levels) do not siginificantly…[Read more] -

Chad, the tax cut package WAS the conservative line – repubs insist that a dollar back in taxes to people and businesses brings in more work, despite the evidence of the past eight years of tax policies as well as all the studies to the contrary. So in this tax package, the conservatives got what they wanted – tax cuts for all, despite the fact…[Read more]

But both that temporary job and the furloughed job exist, at least where I work, to some degree because of the Reinvestment stuff.
The alternative would have been no jobs all around.

and don’t forget that the tax cut bill, as far as I know, also involved the elimation of the mortgage tax credit. No more subsidized sprawl, less jobs for residentially inclined LA’s..

Jason, I disagree – the stimulus funds kept many state DOT’s going, it certainly did ours, and the smart economists (Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz) detail it’s effects, with the only complaint being it should have been larger.

There already is a proliferation of jobs related to climate change review in the governments (state, fed., local). These could be a real chance to make a difference. Also walkable street type jobs – related to climate change mandates, actually. These are good places to look for work, and will only grow in the coming decade. IMHO
