- Inside the Lakefront Gateway Designs: Graef Vision Features Water in Motion – From Couture to Lakefront: Milwaukee Business Journal
As part of the Lakefront Gateway Design, the Milwaukee-based Graef proposed a boardwalk-like experience featuring plants and water leading visitors from downtown to the lakefront. In addition, Graef’s concept includes amphitheater seating, an outdoor screen, an enclosed space for a café or restaurant, and interactive water features. “It was meant to be programmed so throughout the different seasons it would be different. It would surge and go back down again, and that would be something new for water features,” said Pat Kressin, principal of Graef. Currently, four firms are competing for the city plaza.

From Buttes-Chaumont in Paris to Landschaftspark in Duisburg-Nord, and Summer Palace in Beijing—this list reveals some of the world’s very best green spaces. It’s interesting to note that six of the ten are located in Europe and all but one (New York’s High Line) was built prior to the turn of the 21st century. Is that good or bad for our modern parks? The London practice of Bblur Architecture has won approval to weave a massive slide around the Anish Kapoor-designed ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Plummeting from a 76-meter-tall pinnacle, thrill seekers will reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour! In an effort to seek out culturally unique designs for a marketplace in central Istanbul, Ctrl+Space has announced the winners of its Istanbul Community Market Ideas Competition. Ultimately, the jury was tasked with a tall order of evaluating the 138 entries and selecting 10 finalists. First prize was awarded to “Sprouting from the Ancients” designed by M. Baris Yegena and Ozge Ozkul, from Yegena Architectural Design Office. Their concept evoked a flexible, multi-purpose open-air market that spans over multiple levels, creating a distinct aura. - Take A Tour of the New St. Patrick’s Island in Calgary: The Calgary Herald
After two years of renovations, the 12.5-hectare natural oasis near the East Village in Calgary has opened. Designed by New York-based W Architecture & Landscape Architecture and Denver-based Civitas the island consists of a series of natural amenities, event spaces, and work showcasing the park’s history. With a $45 million price tag, the transformed St. Patrick’s Island was paid for by community revitalization funds through property taxes and officials hope the urban park will become a year-round cultural and recreational haven. Saskatoon’s oldest park recently re-opened after years of major renovations and now boasts a new ferris wheel, miniature Canpotex train, zipline, and much more. “My favourite is the zipline because it goes really fast and you can be sitting and just relaxing while it goes fast,” Evie Tuckerslake said running from the slide to some swings. The $9.5 million project designed by space2place is sure to bring attention to Saskatoon. WATCH: The Zipline at Kinsmen Park
