While the 20th century was driven by magnanimous architecture, the 21st century is shaping up to be more landscape-centric and the industry’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed. Landscape architects and clients together have evolved beyond simply designing for aesthetics, implementing landscape architecture to devise flood barriers and water remediation zones as evidence by the proposals from Rebuild by Design. In addition, landscape architects are linking previously disconnected neighborhoods and reclaiming underutilized land. Now the question becomes how can we work more collaboratively across allied disciplines? Related Article: What Do Architects Need to Learn from Landscape Architects?

Flowing with carefully formed hills and valleys, the China International Garden Expo  has announced a unique landscape pavilion proposal. Designed by Penda Architecture and Design, a pathway weaves through the artificial landscape and visitors are given seeds from a variety of native flowers and fruits to plant as they make their journey. Topped with a gigantic green roof and situated in a stunning, mountainous setting in southwest China—the Chongqing Taoyuanju Community Center is a gem. Covered with plants, vine-covered walls, and an undulating green roof that mimics the topography—the Beijing-based Vector Architects even employed green infrastructure such as a rainwater collection system, passive ventilation, and permeable pavement. “Openings, windows, cantilevers and corridors blur the boundary between the interior and exterior of architecture,” said Vector Architects. “Thus, merging the whole space together with the sky, mountain, trees, sunlight and breeze can eventually create a lively co-existing relationship of artificial structure and natural landscape.” Related Article: Extensive Green Roofs: The Essential Guide

Visions first dreamed up by former New York City Mayor Bloomberg and Bette Midler (who leads the nonprofit New York Restoration Project) have become reality. As part of PlaNYC, New York set out to plant one million new trees in a decade, which was achieved two years ahead of schedule. “While the city planted the majority of the trees (750,000) in parks and along streets, the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) filled in the gaps on other public land—places like housing projects, libraries, airports, churches and synagogues, and hospitals. They also gave away trees to anyone with a yard who wanted one,” said Adele Peters, staff writer at Fast Company. WATCH: New York City Plants 1 Million Trees

Imagine cruising at 760 mph (1,223 km/h) in a sophisticated, yet comfy people-mover system? Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, can picture it now and has been working with hundreds of the brightest engineers, designers, architects, and innovators to develop a high-speed transportation system that would literally transform mobility and land uses. Besides, addressing infrastructure challenges, SXSW Eco discussed the increasing urbanization and its effects on energy, water, climate, and culture. Related Article: What Makes a Biophilic City?
