The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia has announced landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander the winner of the 2015 Margolese National Design for Living Prize. The $50,000 (CAD) annual prize recognizes a Canadian who has made and continues to make outstanding contributions to the development or improvement of living environments for Canadians of all economic classes. The prize was created by a generous estate gift to the University by Leonard Herbert Margolese.

Professor Winifred Curran of DePaul University in Chicago Illinois, recently addressed the ASLA General Meeting and Expo, giving her thoughts on the role of landscape architects in slowing the gentrification process. Professor Curran believes the key to maintaining heterogeneity in a population as long as possible (and thereby slowing the process of gentrification), is for landscape architects and others to design the public realm to be ‘just green enough’, rather than implementing brand new ‘shiny’ parks. She believes this will give neighborhoods just long enough to adapt to the coming changes, and hopefully avoid lower income communities from becoming disenfranchised from the democratic process of change.
