Hi Nick.
Not an honest-to-goodness biography but do check out “The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson, on FLO’s participation in the Chicago World’s Fair planning/design. I myself am surprised at how he became more human to me, toothache, depression, senility and all. But it was worth the read and education. Mystery thriller aside.
A plus…[Read more]

Laura,
I would also like to know more about this program at UT. I currently live in Austin and when I say that I’m applying to MLA programs everyone automatically assumes I’ll be applying to Texas A&M, which apparently has a very strong program. Most people don’t know that UT has a program.
UT, like some other programs, is offering a summer…[Read more] -

I have to agree with Andrew.
After having read all of these valid points in either direction, there does not need to be a clear cut line between then two designations. I don’t feel there needs to be contempt between them either but as he explained it, those are the factual differences.
If you are confident in yourself and your abilities, and…[Read more]

I liken the great recession to a grand game of musical chairs. If you were caught off one of the chairs when the music stopped, you’re basically screwed. I hope all who kept their jobs realize how lucky they are.

Thank you for the advice it’s actually given me a few ideas, so I’ll definitely see where I can go with it.

I’m sure lots of people will have input and you may not be able to proceed this way because of ‘assignment’ constraints….since it appears to be a heavily impacted site, with little or no connectivity for species movement (so a prairie remnant, really), why not intertwine all of the uses of the site? Could part of the prairie be intertwined with…[Read more]

Dan, I looked at all three of these schools when I was trying to figure out where i wanted to go (granted this was like 8 years ago). My impressions were that ESF and Rutgers had stronger programs. Out of those two, ESF is a little more oldschool…they seem to focus more on design and planting and maybe be a little behind the curve with…[Read more]

There is alot of crossover in trying to differentiate between LAs and LDs.
I do not hire a chemical engineer to make me a vodka martini, although the man I love happens to be one and he does make a mean martini. But so does John at my favorite martini bar, and he is not a ChemE.

Well, let’s see if i can make this short, I doubt it though. The purpose of the preserve is mainly to reclaim the land as prairie although originally it was woodland if I remember everything correctly. It is owned by the county so it is a public preserve, the site itself, although I haven’t been there in the summer, is mainly prairie, which I am…[Read more]

What is the purpose of the preserve? Is it already owned publicly – is it a land trust, conservation easement, public park or what? Why does the site need to be more appealing to the public? Why are you trying to convince the donor to commit the entire amount at once? What kind of shape is the existing prairie in? What kind of maintenance is…[Read more]

Kinda hard to comment on it. It’s someones opinion. It really depends what you want to get out of it. I went to ESF 10 years ago for my BLA, and there are some good professors there, but that was 10 years ago. Things change. I’d recommend visiting each program, tour the facilities, and look at the student work. Ask relevant questions such as the…[Read more]
