I’m a pretty big fan of Halprins ‘fountains’/water features. Too bad we really cant design places like those anymore thanks to initiatives like CPTED…d’oh!..forgot this is a fountains discussion.

You’re correct, Philip. Everything we’ve heard is that pervious needs to be swept and/ or vacuumed once or twice a year. There shouldn’t be any issues with sedimentation filling the entire cross section as fines are typically caught in the gravel pores between pavers and don’t migrate downwards.

FYI Illinois is a stickler, you can’t transfer test scores into the state, you either have to take the test in Illinois or be licensed entirely in another state and transfer over the license. In a state fraught with fraud, I don’t blame them for being suspicious…

I’ve been there many times over the past decade (I don’t live there), and have never seen them working. The urns below the museum, yes, the fountains on the stairs no. They had always been drained. Maybe they were just off for the day. I’m going up there on Saturday, I’ll have to drive by and look!

A good way to get an installed planting price estimate is to go over previous bids for plantings. They tend to vary on how they show you what you would be paying for, but you can usually figure out what the total price is for the listed plants and materials and labor to plant them.
I make a spreadsheet (or actually use one provided by a nursery,…[Read more] -

Wow, Jason! embarassing! my memory is from no later than 1990, the last time I was in Philly..they worked then! I actually ‘swam’ in them myself – tried to dip my dog in, and ended up taking the plunge. They are really an odd shape for water elements..too bad they don’t go anymore..

This is a very interesting question… how about updating the costs and pricing, does anyone call various contractors, material yards, and/or nurseries to see how material pricing changes or has change in recent months or are you using “stock” pricing for each estimate. I am wondering because I am going to be updating a lot of company policy and…[Read more]

Assuming you are figuring a construction budget, (including materials and installation), very roughly, and subject to plant material spacing and species, you could use $3.00 a sq.ft. for groundcover/shrub bed areas and come out fine for such a project. You should break out your trees (depending on size $200-$300) and irrigation ($.33 s.f)…[Read more]

Claudia. I’m not familiar your soil conditions in SC but I’ve heard that as part of the regular maintenance for these systems, periodic cleaning of the pore openings is required. I’ve heard that this can be done with a street cleaner or pressure washer and that this should be done to remove the buildup of fines 1-2 times a year. The Florida A…[Read more]

There are plenty of landscape architects out there “taking the work”. They are taking it because they are out competing their competition. They ARE better than the competition. The other side of that coin is that when a landscape architect or LA firm it is not because the public is unaware, or ASLA let them down.It is because someone else out…[Read more]

nice question, thank you, Patty..I am really partial to the fountains leading up to the Phila Museum of Art, for one..Big rectangular bins of water going up the steps, on either side, great views, and all the little kids jumping in, in the heat of the summer..

Again, I think it’s a shame that LA’s are in the situation where they are the ‘fat’ or overburden in the firm. I dont believe we should victimize ourselves though as a profession. We should be better advocates for our selves and work. If we’re that dumb and stupid that a civil cant understand why…[Read more]
