Chris Whitted replied to the topic Is SolidWorks the best 3D CAD software out there today? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 16 years, 1 month ago
The simple answer to that question is the LAs all use AutoCAD/LDD/Civil, some use Sketchup with some back and forth between it and CAD, and the architects exclusively use Revit.

I have a question about this subject also! After failing Section E for the second time in Illinois (note: I don’t grade parking lots all day at work) I am naturally frustrated and in search of more imput/study material. Interestingly enough, Illinois doesn’t allow feedback on ANY professional tests according to continental testing inc. Does anyone…[Read more]

Just some more info for you. The AutoDESK equivalent to SolidWorks is Inventor. They’re both “Solid Modeling” software, in the sense, as you noted, that they model the mass properties of what you’re making. Unlike 3D programs, which are just three dimensional representations of objects. Also, based on your original post, you should note that the…[Read more]

Let’s keep the commentary rolling in here, I will take down the discussion log in two weeks and post a summary of what everyone had to say, the completely unreliable ratio of those employed versus not, and some thoughts about what proactive things we can do to help each other and our profession out in this regard.

The lines are blurred and yet there are landscape designers doing very good work and yes some are using titles incorrectly. We now only have a very few states that are not practice act states and how and what we do will be legally dictated. There are many exemptions that allow designers and many others to continue doing work. I can not speak for…[Read more]

If you need a really good nursery in Qatar, my suggestion is : Al Maktab Al Hollandi is one of the best!
Done a couple of projects with them, and their quality of work as well as their nurseries are superb~ -

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 1 month agoWhat is difficult to understand, and what the passing rates do not reflect, is the number of times a person has taken that section of the exam. For example, the 20 percent of those taking Section B might be taking it for the second or third time. Whether or not taking a section multiple times improves your chances of passing is unknown at least by…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 1 month agoI asked CLARB about two things on the redline review.
A. The extra non-aforementioned fee that raises the price by almost 50%.
B. The no personal checks. They replied with the company line that they need to pay for a room and someone to show us our test. I don’t understand why I can’t just get my redlines mailed to me and it would save the $75…[Read more]

Chris,
Out of the programs you have listed; is there a particular one you use at your firm? -

Thanks everyone, these responses are very helpful! Our goal is to make our products as easily accessible as possible for our customers. Knowing what 3D software is available and landscape architects are using helps put things into perspective and gives us some direction to move forward with. I guess I shouldn’t have posted the question about…[Read more]

Laura, I have been traveling through Central and South America since June. I have noticed that landscape architecture as we think of it is much more prevalent in South America and especially in larger cities. Some of my favorites include Santiago, Lima, Quito, and Bogota. Out of all the countries I visited, it seems like Colombia and Chile are…[Read more]

I personally know more people with landscape architecture degrees who are not licensed than who are (not recent graduates, either). Most of them are functioning as any licensed landscape architect (title act state). The reason for many of them not to be registered is that they were either in business already when they got degreed (like that word?)…[Read more]

Schonbrunn grounds, Nasch Market, 1st District streets and plazas, the little Danube, the Vienna Woods in the 19th District. To get to the woods you can take the 38 tram from Schottentor to Grinzing. From there you can catch the 38A bus up to Kahlenberg for great views over the city. Then, if you’re in the mood, you can hike down through the…[Read more]

I think this discussion is going great! It has been unfolding exactly how I’d hoped. I would like to bring up one point to continue to stir the pot… (and forgive me if someone has already mentioned this)
There are some principals of Landscape Architecture firms that are the lead designer yet they are not licensed. This was the case where I…[Read more]

Residential Design Group 16 years, 1 month agoWow…. and I thought my comment was long winded!
This is great, though, David. I appreciate it. It is helpful to have to have a peer reviewed pub in this conversation (it means i better try to find the one I was referencing!). And it does run contrary to the prevailing wisdom in the “green” community regarding turf. Do you have a web link or…[Read more]
