Where does Residential Landscape Design fit into this mix, and is it viewed as a legitimate subset of the broader picture? Though many Landscape Architects do Residential Landscape Design, and some specialize in that market, where does the 1,000SF-5,000SF project fit in, and where do the practitioners who serve that market fit in to the definition…[Read more]

Don’t think of it as a landscape design tool. First think of it as a drafting tool and keep in mind the same drafting principles that you would use while using your hand. Figuring out how to use lineweight is one of the most significant things you can learn with your hands or with your mouse. Initially the difference is just in the input. Later on…[Read more]

All landscape architects are landscape designers. Some landscape designers are landscape architects. Landscape architecture is an extremely diverse field and since landscape architecture is a portion of landscape design, landscape design is an even more diverse field.

Yes, it is the exact same test. … on the exact same days, if I’m not mistaken. Some have other state sections as well. LARE is Lare, however and where ever.
I did take it in another state because my state offered it only once a year while another offered it twice. … and I was taking the exam for a third state which I had just moved from.…[Read more]

I’ve taken the LARE in multiple states – Yes, the Sec. E is really tough, but it’s the same exam across the Country. Site design has gotten simpler over time – eliminating lighting and plant components from the exam. Grading is just a tough exam whether you’re in Montana or Arizona. Just keep on pushing ahead! I finally passed all five…[Read more]

I agree that much of the two allied professions overlap. I think many individual LDs are well qualified to approach topics of drainage, grading, sustainable planning, site design, specifying materials, lighting, planting, and many of things within in the LAs turf. In general it does seem that LD work focuses on residential and light commercial…[Read more]

No. 2 years……..ASLA is deliberatey in the dark..any kind of special article on this catastrophic effect on all design professionals? No. High faluten projects out of touch with typical LA work and LAs themselves? and contests for best designs? Plenty.

Chris Whitted replied to the topic Is SolidWorks the best 3D CAD software out there today? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 16 years, 3 months ago
Best for what? For who?
In examining any piece of software you have to judge it based on the features you need or would use, and what you’d use it for. ACAD is notorious for not being well-suited to landscape architecture. That’s why there were add-ons developed like Eagle Point or Land F/X. Sketchup is great for quick, blocky things or if you…[Read more]

You still purchase a standalone or network license with AutoCAD. They do offer a suscription service which you are constantly upgraded and have access to training and tech support. It usually isn’t that beneficial to upgrade to the latest product whenever it comes out, especially if there are substantial revisions. I try to stick to an ‘every…[Read more]

Quite the undertaking; but a good one none-the-less. I like the book idea. Whatever approach you take, I recommend you identify a sample project – possibly one you’re currently working on by hand (?) – and go from there. By doing this, you will be able to plan and work through much of the process – from sheet set-up to model space/paper space…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 3 months agoClayton,
It varies by state, but it is really more of a paper keeping issue. In CA you have 5 years to finish before they purge their files. And typically the expiration date on the test occurs within 5-7 years, but again, it is state by state. -

In other words do you have to apply for licensure within a certain amount of time upon passing the L.A.R.E.?

Sadly, not inspired enough to take Section E again in June. I’ve got a huge project due right about then, and I just don’t think I can give studying the time it really needs. Being self-employed and having to do this on one’s own really sucks. Happy to have work, not happy that my big…[Read more] -

check local community coleges, they often offer AutoCAD in a continuing education program during after hours time periods, generally very affordable and flexible, if not there are a ton of books and videos on the web… http://www.lynda.com is a great source for videos but there is a subscription fee.

The most important thing with any software is what you do with it. If you think that the images produced by the company for advertisments look to “video game”, then chances are you will never like the final output that you are able to create with the software. All these programs are just tools to convey your message, if you can get you message…[Read more]
