My apologies, though I find the hostility a tad unnecessary, especially in the context of a landscape architecture forum. Regardless, thanks for the replies.

I haven’t done any update to my folio, but I’m currently working full time at a firm (the one I interned at) made up of registered planners and architects, and 1 or 2 unregistered LA’s. I was hoping grad school would act as a means to not only go beyond what I learned in my BSLA, but also act as a means to reinsert myself into the field when…[Read more]

I’ll be there.
Although I’m a first year MLA student….
I’m looking forward to many of the topics, and perhaps going to see Taliesin West on Saturday.
I’d be interested to see if any other LAs or students are planning on attending. And if so, what sessions they are attending.

In responce to some of the discussion on requiring ASLA designation to only licensed professionals, remember ASLA does not govern licensure across the US and abroad. You have indivdual linesure in all statees and the professional practice act and title acts differ from state to state. I think it would be a false indication to state those using the…[Read more]

ASLA is a professional association and RLA denotes registration. Note that these are two completely different things. And depending on the state you may be registered or licensed in you need to verify based on your states law and rules the proper designation. RLA may not be the correct designation in some states. I know we ran into that in…[Read more]

My job position/title is “Landscape Architect” so on business cards and stationary where the title is shown, I only use ASLA.
When I am signing and sealing plans and other documents the license number is below my name so there is a bit of redundancy with using RLA.
Outside of the workplace, depending on the audience, RLA is used to emphasize my…[Read more]

this has been in use in various cities, has varying results, for 15 to 20 years..charlottesville, Va. was on board with it in 2002, and it was old by then…It’s ok, it requires heavy investiment by cities as bike stock just depletes continuously, and bikes need to be repaired..So it needs constant funding, without bringing in revenue, but that is ok…

I loved it, everything except the title..Pollan is doing a lot, despite the fact that he is only a journalist, to bring the worlds attention to plant/food issues..

First considerations are what (if any) requirements does your school have? Mine allowed for paid or unpaid internships, both for credit, one was required, and it was generally done in the fourth year. There were also requirements as to the type of things you had to be exposed to for it to count. I only did the one, but after that I wished I’d gone…[Read more]

Out of curiosity I just looked up Groningen in the Netherlands (mentioned in the article ben posted) on Google Earth. From the pictures of some of the streets, it looks like it is 90% car free, but a very vital city.

Bikes are a good replacement for how a lot of people currently drive. If you drive by yourself and don’t have to haul a lot, you could easily switch over to bikes or public transit. There are even some pretty good bike trailers out there. In Boise there’s one or two bike taxis. Cars don’t have much advantage in speed in Boise, either. I’ve seen…[Read more]

Denver LA 16 years, 5 months agoHey if you haven’t seen it already there’s an article in this months (11/09) issue of Landscape Architecture. It’s on the Eddie Maestas Park, designed by studioINSITE. The Eddie Maestas park is the triangle at the corner of Broadway and Lawrence across from the Denver Rescue Mission. It’s a pretty interesting article, starts with “Eddie Maestas…[Read more]

While I was not involved in the design phases of the project, on a cross country motorcycle trip I came upon this skate park while wandering around Manhattan. I completely loved how a normally unused space became an obvious ‘home’ for many of the kids in the area. All takes place under the on-ramp to the Brooklyn Bridge.
Here are a few of my…[Read more]

Yep, this is the same thing in film format. Pollan narrates most of the film.
I just thought there was so much room for project ideas in there from the use of orchards to the interaction of humans with plants and their reproduction and commercial value. There is so much potential if only I was a student and not a job seeker.

I think you guys are correct that it would be tough to implement this type of thing in the US. I was just excited about it because it is an example of the political will allowing changes that are typically relegated to student planning projects. The flip-side is that while car-free areas would not work everywhere in the US, they would definitely…[Read more]

Samuel,
I was accepted into the Design Workshop Summer internship program in 2007. I liken my experience that summer to a semester in grad school.
I recommend applying for ‘programs’ like DW’s or EDAW’s (not even sure if it exists anymore) as you’ll get a lot more out of it than experience sitting behind a desk making pretty drawings all day. If…[Read more]
