I’m not against licensing. I was just trying to honestly answer the question asked. Based on other threads that you started or participated in I interpret the question to mean that you want to know what you can legally do as a self employed designer in the field of landscape architecture in the place where you live prior to getting your li…[Read more]

Hey Bennett,
Hope you are well man. Some of these responders have it right. Some do not. First, learn the ‘law’ on what titles or words are protected. That is the name portion. Second, state and location laws/regulations will dictate what you can and cannot do. For instance, in Knoxville, and other parts of TN you have to stamp a legal document or…[Read more] -

Tennessee: “Definitions: No definitions of landscape architect or landscape architecture.”
Like many of the so-called Practice Acts, Tennessee seems to be a Title Act. What I read does not exempt anyone from doing anything as long as they don’t call what they do Landscape Architecture or call themselves Landscape…[Read more] -

One thing that I learned over the years is that, at least where I work (Massachusetts), is that it is not the stamp that does much for you, but it is the process that gets you to the stamp that opens doors for you.
I know more people who are not licensed whom others believe are Landscape Architects than people I know who are licensed Landscape…[Read more] -

I suppose the biggest difference in my mind is residential vs. commercial. I believe you can do anything you want except call yourself a landscape architect in the residential world. Of course there are municipal regulations that prescribe when a licensed professional must be on board (irrigation, structural/civil engineers, etc).
While 90%…[Read more] -

As Craig said, it depends on what state or local municipality you want to do work in. Here are links to some of the regulating authorities that you might encounter working in the Memphis vicinity:

Sorry Alan, you’ll have to catch them on foot to take one out. No guns or bow and arrows in this neighborhood. Besides you probably wouldn’t want to eat one of these scrawny, mangy things. It’s really sad to see deer in such poor condition.

It’s not so much the country as it is the city and office you work for. Here in the States we have some of the most impressive projects in the world, but we also have big budget garbage projects. I suggest you go to any safe place where you can find a good firm that’s interested in your talents.

That’s so true Henry. I’ve been to Sydney twice and they spend a lot of money on landscapes. I here that Melbourne is even more impressive.

It depends on what state or local municipality you want to do work in. I know a few unlicensed landscape designers who are running profitable businesses. The common denominator with them is they all are talented and well connected.

I offer my clients with deer problems my specialized deer eradication service. For a reasonable fee, my son in law and I bring our rifles and dine on free range organic meat all year…
I have found that dogs are about the most effective way to run the deer off the property if my eradication service is not required. -

Oh, I did not realize that you were already working full time. The difference being that you already have a primary income, so you are not depending on the work for survival.
You might want to try to do some design/drafting for a well established higher end landscape design/build. Many of those were started by people with LA degrees back before…[Read more] -

Marketing yourself for freelance is a tough gig with or without a license. The reason has less to do with us and more to do with the consumer. They can’t see the product that we will make for them until after they purchase it, so their tendency is to concentrate on whom they will purchase it from as if they are the product (an entirely reasonable…[Read more]

Some might look for your ability to convince. Others may be more interested in your ability to facilitate discussion to draw out information pertinent to custom design for the particular client.
It depends on the firm and how they do business. Some are sales first, some are design first. It is just as important to understand your potential…[Read more] -
