Thanks to all so far who have responded. A little more background on the issue: For the last 18-20 years I have been designing for my own small company. Add 5 years of occasional plans at a local Garden Center before that.
I feel my work is very good quality and comments from some others in the trade who have looked at them feel I have an unusual…[Read more] -

Andrew’s suggestions are all great – there’s a bit of a learning curve with all of the software before you get quick at it, but once you’re squared away it’s nice to be able to edit so quickly. I hated the scraping and cut&tape working on mylar.
So to all the hand drafters out there: what do you do when the architect changes their building f…[Read more] -

I’d bet money on Olmsted working in BIM, maybe getting CATIA to work for his needs. He’d probably have a dedicated programming staff to create plug-ins his needs and laughing at the rest of us for being shoe-horned into using software meant for engineers and building architects.

I have no problem with old school. I wish I had those skills.
There has to be a reason why Allan feels the need to use software. Maybe his hands are not what they used to be. Maybe he is required to use CAD to interact with other professionals. I don’t know, but I know he wants to change for some reason. I’m not going to judge him on that, but I…[Read more] -

Central Park took years to design and teams of draftsmen and illustrators (and Calvert Vaux) to produce the mountains of plans…in INK. People forget the row after row of draftsmen in a smokey, stuffy, hot room in suits with vests who, bent over their tables with inkwells and trying to draw on linen, which worked at the pleasure and direction of…[Read more]

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 12 years, 8 months agoCharles – you obviously have not read SITES closely or either don’t understand it. It is a performance base metric – the opposite of prescriptive design. Also, I challenge you to certify a project. In my work, I have found that those who believe they have been “doing it for 40 years” have great difficulty meeting the minimum criteria.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 12 years, 8 months agoInteresting. Two entities fighting over who will make money selling another guide to prescriptive design. There is nothing new in the SITES project except adding points up to get to some magical level so you can pin a gold star on your wall. We really don’t need another entity telling us how to design sustainable projects. We have been doi…[Read more]

As in Spain, it looks like Brazilian Landscape Architects are working tirelessly to achieve full recognition for Landscape Architecture as a profession in Brazil.
Landscape Architects have already access to a number of graduate and postgraduate studies in Brazil, and there are new ones emerging. Sadly, they lack full professional…[Read more] -

What version are you running? Another thing to check is what version of AutoCAD is the file.

I’ll hadn’t been aware of that one but it seems you need the enhanced version to work on Mac, and it says ask for quote. Anyone have a quote? (I don’t like to send email and end up on company contact lists).
Meanwhile, like Laurent I have found Autocad-WS all I need for opening and grading student work or viewing outside files for discussions. -

Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions. I think I’ll go with a steel fire ring inside my stone fire pit with fire brick (if I can find it 🙂 or sand on the bottom to protect the existing patio. Thanks again, lots of good knowledge on here!

The salary numbers seem about right and havent diverged much from the natl avg a few years ago. One thing to take into consideration is that some of those salaries may be hourly and/or seasonal.

Any good stone/masonry fire pit will incorporate fire brick and refractory mortar. This is your best option for limiting the radiant heat from a fire. Do a web search on it and you will find what you need.

Same situation. aby concrete is porous and will hold water…so it isn’t fire resistent and will crack or spall apart, sometimes violently. You can get these elevated models with grates in them to keep the fire off the metal base and allow coals to fall below., and you really don’t need too much air underneath unless you plan on doing some b…[Read more]

The content or the format? The content should basically be the same (life/safety/welfare of the public hasn’t changed much) as the old – the Strom ‘Site Engineering for Landscape Architects’ was a good resource for me when I took the written version.
