I’m a bit late but thought I’d reply anyway…
I use PlantManager and have done for 15 years. It has a trial version you can download and try out. It can do everything from small residential projects to huge commercial projects.

I know the guy who developed it – he’s a Landscape Architect – and he is continually updating it. He uses it every d…[Read more] -

Hi Rob, great find, thanks a lot ! I just browsed through quickly now and will read it carefully tonight : I love these trees at Angkor Wat complex.
About the soil here : Bangkok is located on an estuary, soil is uniquely composed of fine sediments until way deep under. At ground level, it is all compacted and drenched clay : water table usually…[Read more]

or save 2 or 3 grand and pick up a note or one of the dozen or so other tablets on the market already using wacom technology. No doubt though the wacom tablet will be the best for creating finished graphics and artwork. <y samsun tab, cost $450 uses a stylus made by wacom with 512 levels. The ipads dont support wacom tech, yet, so using a stylus…[Read more]

You should look into the new cintiq tablets from Wacom. The hybrid one just came out that runs an android OS and they gave another one coming out that will have windows 8 on it. Hearing lots of good things about them. The come with a Wacom stylus specifically designed for them I think.

I would imagine that the Surface Pro is the way to go. You can run a full-fledged Autocad and Photoshop on that thing. Pen is extremely pressure sensitive from what I’ve heard so it’s great for drawing and rendering. You should youtube the artwork artists I’ve made on it. I don’t own one myself, but I’m very interested in getting one. I’ve…[Read more]

What is the soil type on this site? Is it an easily compacted clay (I doubt it) or a more sandy soil (most likely). Depending on the soil and how deep that existing gravel is, there may not be much of a problem. The canopy seems a bit smaller than I would have expected with this species and that trunk.
I suppose it may be worth using an air spade…[Read more] -

Its important to note that the exam is always evolving so what might not seem relevant now may come back and be relevant on a future exam. It always seems to depend on which way the wind is blowing that year.

Interesting products, thanks a lot Jason. We are still speaking of compaction though. And that sort of maintenance would scare any client I know of.

I’m told A=1, B=2 and D questions are in 3&4. Graphic questions aren’t used anymore. I used the ’05 ppi study guide when I took it (right before the switch) and there were some differences in B(2): no surveying questions, new questions on fire safety planning, playgrounds, and stormwater management. I’d say the section A portion was 90% r…[Read more]

Hey Stephen,
I still actually use AutoCad on most plans I make simply because I can lay things out quicker, then import the linework into Dynascape. Personally I dont like how some of the editing tools work in Dynascape but the program is good with making nice looking planting plans that can be colored really quick in Dynascape Color.
Since the…[Read more] -

How are you finding Dynascape? I am thinking about dumping CAD and going with it, what are your thoughts?

Hey Ben
Yeah that’s a tough one and Rob has nailed it!!
I worked for a while in a small firm (9 people) and it was nice. The bosses became your friends, you got to go out for lunches/games of golf etc and the work was manageable. I was about as far from a number as you could get.
Now had I chosen the larger firm I would have been a number with…[Read more] -

Don’t use a hard surface. The gravel or stone dust goes better anyay. Every few years, you clear off the surface material, peel back the geotextileand replace the mulch. Then relay the geotextile and the granular surface. More maintenance? Sure, but worth it to keep the tree.
Another thing would be to not pave the whole area, but put down wheel…[Read more] -
