If someone asked me that today, I would bust out my smartphone, Google Image it and show it to the alien. 10 seconds job done, no BS, quick and to the point, no money wastedÂ

At one interview I was presented with sheets of blank paper, coloured pens and pencils and asked: “pretend you have to describe a wheelbarrow and an ironing board to an alien.”
I was slightly taken aback but on reflection I think this is a great interview question. Whether you choose to write a description, sketch a scenario, fold the paper into a…[Read more] -

Hi Mike,
Great question!  Here are a few that I found when doing some research:  10000ft, basecamp, podio, and Zoho
A couple time tracking apps worth checking out: Harvest, Toggl, and Freckle
What features are you looking for the most – time tracking, collaboration, scheduling, task management? Â -

As a future reference we manufacture a reusable below grade tree staking system, that is gaining allot of popularity in DFW and Houston. ‘Our Safety Stake Root Anchor’ has been installed on several projects at Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Univ. of North Texas, TCU and Baylor Univ. along with 100’s of other projects. PDF drawings are available on the…[Read more]

All of these responses have been most helpful! Like I previously stated I began playing around with array and it was very useful. I also now have been playing around with the measure and divide which speeds things up a bit more! I also downloaded the free trial of land fx on my personal laptop and it is great. just need to learn it a bit more. I agree with John. This is how we do it too. The Legend shows the hatch, the plant it represents, spacing, and container size. Develop the spacing chart detail and your done. If there is a special condition, draw a detail of that condition.

I have to admit that my native skepticism of “big glorious movements” kicked in some time ago on this whole thing, and it wasn’t helped by having heard from a relative who has to go to work in one of these, and people can’t stand it so badly that the workforce has shrunken with preference for just working from home instead. Of course, even valid…[Read more]

cool! Thanks, Andrew! Before I went to graduate school they wanted me to take some art classes, so I enrolled at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for a pre-arch. class – we did a tour of something like thirty ‘vest pocket parks of Manhattan” – starting of course with Paley Park..I kept the tour outline for years but then I lost it, which I will a…[Read more]

Depending on the size of the plan, I have different techniques. Like others have stated, if the plan is at a small scale and so are the plants, use a hatch pattern to indicate plant typw. Include a detail of how you want them planted (staggard or lined up), and let the contractor figure it out based on area. For larger plants or at a much larger…[Read more]

A good design problem for a class, indeed. Â Reminds me of what our friend, William H. Whyte once said:
“All things being equal, you can calculate that where pedestrian flows bisect a sittable place, that is where people will most likely sit. And it is not so perverse of them. It is by choice that they do so. If there is some congestion, it is an…[Read more] -

John,
The trend in the industry is towards more information, more accurate quantities, realtime cost take-offs, you name it. Â Firms are demanding it, clients are insisting on it. Â To tell a client you have no idea what the quantities are, and that they need to ask the contractor, inevitably means you will be value-engineering the project. Â I ju…[Read more] -

Maybe, but aren’t they all members of the licensure boards of 48 states plus few other jurisdictions? Â Shouldn’t that tell us something? Â And they do get a fair amount of volunteer time to help cover some of the costs.
