very funny, Henry.
On the other hand, I think even Benjamin Franklin knew we cannot have a world without bees..

Washington DC is the opposite coast, but it is the most depression proof city in the US. I kinda like DC, despite the humidity – the museums are great, and the beach is pretty close.
Just a thought, Roland, I know you are into the other coast for your relatives.. -

Sorry Craig didn’t mean to post under you and jump on a bandwagon. Just wanted to say that I like houston. And think the OP should consider it.

Two years ago we put out an ad to fill a position as an entry level or engineer in training for site design. We hired the person who was close enough to commute. It turned out that the kid is awesome, but we really found that out later. No one wanted to have someone move to the area for the job because we did not want to make matters worse for…[Read more]

landscapeplanner is right on the money with Houston. Do your research but it is a good place to be and there is a lot of hiring going on right now.
I have more work than I can handle and know other firms are getting that way too.
As far as the arts here in H-town landscapeplanner is on the money again. I am amazed at what oil money can do for…[Read more]

I like Denver a lot, although I haven’t been there in several years. I had the Colorado ASLA job openings page bookmarked for a long time. Last year there were tons of jobs listed there. Part of my problem is I like too many of these places, but I have to keep narrowing down my list.
I just want to make it clear that I’ve spent the last year ap…[Read more] -

Denver, hands down…it’s a Portland, Oregon on steroids..Golf courses galore, parks for days, bike trails emphasized..Lived here 9 months and there have been over 25 ads for landscape architect specific jobs since September 2012..sunny 9 more months a year than seattle/Portland..thus, people are outdoors all the time and tend to be more apt to…[Read more]

A couple of observations that I have made about where I am and what makes things work here got me thinking and having lived and landscaped in the town that Roland is in also got me thinking.
First, Moscow, Idaho is a great place to live and a lousy place to be a landscape architect. It is too small, the demographic does not lend itself to a…[Read more] -

Ronald:
The previous postings are all filled with the kind of sound and supportive advice and guidance I would offer, but why repeat it ?
Mr. Garulay and Radice are spot on with their suggestions and I would (from recent experience) underscore Texas and principally four main cities in it where if you can re-establish yourself and aggressively…[Read more]

I’ve never heard it as reference to LAs, just types of engineers. It first came to me as:
“An electrical, a mechanical and a civil engineer all sat down one day to try and decide what kind of an engineer God must be.
The Electrical Engineer said: “God must be an electrical engineer. You only have to look at the complex nervous system powered by…[Read more] -

I always heard the first part as “God is the architect of mankind”. That may help it sink in a little.

The demand for what might be considered traditional suburban housing still exists, and many think of it as the ultimate form of housing for which they should aspire. Developers are responding to market demand. A bigger determinant likely to evolve will be congestion and gas prices. Higher density living becomes more attractive when one re…[Read more]

I would agree with Chris. I consult with another firm and we recently experienced an issue with our server and in the process of replacing it we learned that it is better to use relative references for all things not just CAD. We are using Vectorworks Landmark and even here we must use relative. It might depend on your servers operating system but…[Read more]

Sounds like your hearts in the West and near family. Those are the places I would venture too. Nothing like having a support network to encourage you to get the ball rolling. I have seen a lot of job postings for LA’s in California, and most of these were not even posted on the ASLA website. Get to a location and focus on the market, start NET…[Read more]
