I would branch out away from any degree that has you specializing in something that requires a kickin’ economy. That would definitely lead me away from Resort Planning…unless you plan on saving a lot of money when it is bustling! 🙂 Even Urban design…all of that is contingent on a healthy economy. I guess I would lean towards an MBA.
I would…[Read more] -

I see what you are trying to say now, Andrew. Yes, not ideally but pragmatically.
I agree with someone that posted that a lot of the green growth is in tightening up door leaks, insulation, new windows, etc. When I worked at the City of Moscow it was my job to measure the energy use, costs and carbon footprint. I actually found it very…[Read more] -

One more time here. In a near final attempt to keep the original intent of this controversial forum topic true to its roots as being centered on the consequences of What implications for the environment (in general) and our profession (specifically) that an R Squared administration might mean, I have added three more recent articles that attempt t…[Read more]

I too have visited Boulder City a few times and completely share your admiration for it.
The layout of its street pattern, adjacent residential character and the period architecture that remain there from the 30’s is remarkably intact. And your also right, it continues to be the one of the more “sought after” places to live in the entire Las V…[Read more] -

I’m always surprised by how many people think they’ll have a better shot of getting work if they specialize their education. You’d be taking a field of limited opportunity (at this time) and further limit it to a small portion of the field. Typically, the thought is to be one of the few qualified to work in that niche, but is that really…[Read more]

or at least the classes that can help you run a business – your own or as part of one. Accounting and time management and tax law and sales/contracts and insurance/liability and all that other stuff really does matter.

I went to Boulder City many times when I lived in the Las Vegas valley and I can vouch for how well done it is. Its also a very comfortable place to walk, which is rare in the valley. Today it is considered to be one of the more desireable places to live in the area. I suppose the fact that they don’t allow gambling within city limits also in…[Read more]

Don’t be fooled into thinking that an grad degree will be any more helpful in finding a job as an LA if you already have a BLA. For an entry level position, it really deosn’t matter what your focus or interests are in – just that you know CAD and sketchup, etc. I look at grad school in this field as an end and not a means – that is, it’s a goo…[Read more]

Boilerplater:
You could very well be right on that guess. The constructed legacy that unemployed architects, landscape architects, civil engineers and artists designed and had built during the Depression was huge. Many, many examples of that legacy are still with us today, cherished, enjoyed and used by countless numbers of people. One of our…[Read more]

I did not say the government should not invest. I’m just saying that investing in green without a vibrant economy is not going to happen for very long. More importantly, the investment in green does not make an economy that does not exist.
All of it comes back into play when the economy recovers. It is the nature of our society. When the public…[Read more] -

Regarding “going green”, In my area I still often see ads for energy analysts and energy efficiency experts for buildings and I know companies are investing a lot in improving the performance of their facilities in this way. Its not so much the sexy stuff, like windmills and solar, more like weather stripping on doors, and updated, more e…[Read more]

That’s because they were all working for the WPA, the CCC and the NPS and had nothing to complain about! OK, that’s conjecture on my part, but I recall reading about noted landscape architect Lawrence Halprin’s work designing camps for migrant farm workers as an employee of the WPA. They were simple and low budget, but they were the c…[Read more]

I don’t see it as failing. And I disagree with the notion that the government shouldn’t invest in green energy. As with business, investing in new technologies is inherently risky. The government in general has been the one to pave the way when it comes to researching new ideas.
People are being hired, it has been slow growth but that was…[Read more] -

When I first joined this forum there was a lot of discussion about how the economy was going to be lifted by going green. I said back then that when the economy is down, these type of changes don’t happen. They happen when prosperity can afford them. The big changes that work come when things are going well and/or it is practical for consumers to…[Read more]
