I am sorry but have to ask, without really expecting a reply, why your firm has been asked to do this apparently with no adequate brief.
I have read the other replies and can only add these points:
It could be good to plan 4 phases – street trees, others say in parks, both using paving and other aspects that may take some time, money and ef…[Read more] -

The answer to that question depends on several factors
– Are the officials asking how many trees are going to be planted by volunteers for the entire plan or in one sitting?
– What is the organizational capacity of the city and other organizations that would assist with this effort?
– Does the city have established volunteer days throughout the…[Read more] -

Presuming your location experiences significant (more than 1 or 2) freeze/thaw cycles over winter, perennials and trees/shrubs need root protection at a minimum, and also anti-dessication measures if conditions are really bad.
I’ve used large bubble-wrap around big pots/containers, followed by aesthetically-pleasing wraps of either burlap or duck…[Read more] -

Hello PGA:
This non-profit has been doing tree planting on a house-by-house, street-by-street, neighborhood-to-neighborhood in Portland, Oregon for a very long time.

If they can’t answer your questions, have them refer you to the Urban Forester for the City of Portland. (Portland Parks Bureau). They take urban…[Read more] -

I’m T&M, so I’m not too worried about overextending. Its just frustrating to see a great property with so much potential in the hands of someone who cant see the forest through the trees.
The owner is insisting on up-zoning his own property and refuses to get a broker or someone qualified to do a proforma..insists on going it alone and its become…[Read more]

Nick:
I hope your fee accommodates some of the interference this client is apparently giving you in getting the job done he hired you for in the first place. If you have a clear and defensible clause in your professional services contract addressing additional services, that may come in handy also in this case.
You have left how examples of how…[Read more] -

I love it!! Copy and Paste. The design elitist have spoken. I know plenty of LAs and firms who would love to “copy and paste” a project just to make a monthly income.
My dear Emily, when you get out from the safe haven of academia world and venture out in the “real” world dealing with BUDGETS, COST and the clients who pay for these projects, you…[Read more] -

Akinyinka, much improvement over your original version. However, I still think you need to work on the lineweight for the memorial design part, try using four to five line widths, e.g. (000, 00, 1, 2, and 3), and if the firm is only looking for a designer, cut back to only two pages of your art work and remove the word “art” from the cover and…[Read more]

Very nice Akinyinka, it gives a good impression of who you are as a designer. I like the paintings.
You could beef up the constuction and technical side a little more. Also think about tailoring the emphasis towards the job you’re applying for. Always ask the question “what is it they need most”, is my best advice. -

I think it is a good subject for discussion. I’m reading it. I’m with Rob at this point. Where does the rubber hit the road – how does it transfer from a concept to built work that is unique and not something that would not be derived from a normal design process?

And on your sarcastic rationality attempt labeled #9: gadgets can be useful towards sustainability if they provide information that allows one to monitor and change energy/resource use (cough, LEED, cough), can direct you to the most efficient route, encourage use of alternative transit, captivate young people to educate them on such initiatives,…
