I feel like social media contributes more towards the continued branding of our company with its existing clients. We use it the way websites used to have an ‘in the news’ section. It is much more immediate and people who use FB and other forms read it and move on. We also try not to overwhelm our ‘fans’ with posts. once every 2-3 weeks is eno…[Read more]

As a student I was able to attend the Green Roof Professional training offered by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (http://www.greenroofs.org/index.php/eduprogram/grnroofpro-grp). It was offered over about 2 weeks, and covered some really technical details about roof construction, as well as some of the issues to be dealt with in a green roof…[Read more]

I’ve been reading and hearing many warnings about these. They (of course) want you to send money and then they don’t do anything. Some are also identity theft rings that use your info for nefarious purposes. Be very careful with anything overseas unless you applying DIRECTLY to a known company.

Hi Eric,
I am a one person, work from home firm. I have been using contractors for the last few years and it has worked extremely well. One of my collaborators is even out of state. They also work from home and may have other regular jobs. The key for me has been that I have worked with them in the past and know their talent, skills and work…[Read more] -

I really wish more firms would consider this model! Think of all the traffic congestion that would be reduced and the cost of overhead.
But the idea of being a free-floating contract worker for the rest of my career doesn’t appeal to me that much. Especially in an international and globalized economy where maybe the bulk of contract work wo…[Read more] -

Hey Eric,
Yes, I hoped the idea of energy and resource savings would be implied as well.
I am working for basically a two person office. I think there are several other advantages to working from home, especially in a digital age–Design can be done with digital tools, so there is also limited need for paper consumption, etc. Also, when I w…[Read more] -

Nick, Your post is intriguing and I say this after just last week thinking about the promotion of Bike to Work Day/Week. I was thinking about the idea of taking that same idea and promoting the idea of not only biking, but walking, bussing, light rail, car pooling, etc. And it came to mind the idea of telecommuting as a way to save…[Read more]

Mock orange is good for making bows (bows and arrows) in case our other national defense strategies fail and we need to get “old school” on them… and those oranges would probably hurt like hell too if we could figure out a way to propel them… potato gun?

I’d love to go through special forces training. I actually applied to the Navy Seals when I got laid off in Nov. ’08 but they turned me down due to age. I was 30, the cut off is 29.
I used to be in good enough shape to do it too… mtn bike 75 miles, run 6+, swim a mile, lifted 4-6 days a week, could carry a 90 lb pack all day… that’s the kind…[Read more] -

Poison Ivy is classified as a delayed-response defensive strategy. (I just made that up… but it sounds pretty good, eh?) The perpetrator won’t realize the discomfort they are due to experience until it’s too late. Then they will be very sorry indeed… and easily identifiable from the welts, swelling and redness…

Does “Faith Based City Planning” imply that we should turn over our will to God because he/she/it will plan our cities for us or that city planners think they are God…and we should have faith in them… because they know what’s best for us?

I’ll voice some praise. I think the US is a great place to be a landscape architect. Sure we have some identity issues here…but I have done enough traveling to realize that that is the case pretty much anywhere. I work for a small firm which focuses mostly on high end residential design, and we work with some fantastic architects who really do…[Read more]

I do understand the point that not everyone wants to live in the city, even if it were the most wonderfully designed neighborhood imaginable. However, the prevailing suburban model is not a sustainable alternative in the long run. As Jim Kuntsler says our suburbs are a fantasy cartoon versions of living in the country. The whole article sets up th…[Read more]

I think you need always to look at who is saying what. The dissatisfaction is more related to expectations resulting in disappointment. There were lots of reasons to have high expectations for those who began the process of going to school between four and twelve years ago. The expectation was that you’d come out of school into a $50k job with…[Read more]

Although the argument started off relatively well (I think our neighbourhoods can sometimes be over-designed and over-regulated), he doesn’t seem to have any logic to his arguments later on:
“I am thankful that I live in a place that offers a sense of space, yet is not too distant from neighbors and services. I am especially thankful for…[Read more] -

Jason,
Like Noah, I don’t see how the approach you are advocating is any less faith based. Your preachers are economists, developers and planners like Rick Harrison. Your god is the Market. Your evil enitities are governments and new urbanist planners.
Rick Harrison never mentions anything he KNOWS, only things he believes, does not believe or is…[Read more] - Load More
