James Corner’s book of photos he did with Alex MacLean has some gorgeous aerial photos of the center pivoted irrigation agriculature on the large scale..You are probably familiar with that – it may not have the suburban juxtaposition you are looking for..

This link looks really good on the iphone, and I’m sure it works great on all mobiles.
Maybe there is no real need for an app.
Thanks for the post

I’ve know of LD’s that are extremely successful, however, they don’t have the background in drainage, Grading and specifying materials, So what they do to compensate is hire Landscape Architects to remedy those areas they will or cannot do. My 2 Cents worth.

I think that the paper salesman analogy is right on. We sold a lot of paper in the last decade. We got more paper salesmen because they were needed. The consumption of paper stopped and now those whom we supply have full shelves and product is not moving (the country over-built). Someday the inventory will move again and the shelves will have to…[Read more]

Thanks alland, I was about to respond to Rick that in Arizona Landscape Architecture is a required professional service for new-build (just about everything but S.F. residential).
Is that Arizona or Phoenix? Some small hot spots ask for Royal service. In much of the rest of the outback an LA’s role is very minimal, limited, restricted or…[Read more]

Not at all “caviar”, but a necessary part of a new project municipal submittal and approval process. As necessary here as civil or structural in fact.
Certainly not a…[Read more]

I’m in the Mid-Atlantic of the US. It’s code here to put in rain gardens and stormwater controls to protect the Chesapeake Bay. People put those in (because they have to) and call it sustainable. They put up a few signs and call it a day. Most are not done well, and the rest of the site leaves lots of room for improvement. LEED is code in some…[Read more]

Here in New Jersey we have the Municipal Land Use Law & Site Plan Law; where PEs dominate a majority of what can be signed and sealed as far as plans for professional review are concerned. Therefore many planting plans and the like fall victim to a tree stamp and a plants book. That sucks, and has taken away decades of work…Now we have a…[Read more]

I’m glad you are running into ‘sustainable’ so much, Jason – I’m not..I have trouble getting low-water projects to fly, much less sustainable..For me, the word is descriptive of a goal, much more so than ‘green.’ People give it many definitions because it involves the vast array of human experience. I see it as a goal, for just about everything.…[Read more]

Well it helps to be married to a Dr, so I’m fortunate there. But I would rather be underemployed than UNemployed, that way I keep my healthcare and don’t have to be the new guy in a firm. It seams we are not on a bell curve but a W curve as experts seem to be saying. My firm has not received a new commission in 6+ months and the projects I’m…[Read more]

I read these posts and others in other discussions. I don’t know how to say this diplomatically but I think some posters are high on weed. We don’t do anything others can’t do we just do many things better. It goes back to Maslow’s hierarchy of need. First comes survival and later, when all other needs have been met, comes caviar. We are the…[Read more]

I actually prefer the term ‘green’, as it has become more of a brand. Such as in the USGBC, it’s not the USSBC. The connotation is that you are trying to make the project as environmentally and socially responsible as possible, beyond “sustainable,” and without having to use the ‘s’ word.

I’m not objecting to to the practice. In fact, I’m very much for adaptive-reuse (been there, done that), brownfield redevelopment (been there, done that), and low impact, low resource development. I’ve pioneered the use of alternative planting materials in commercial applications in my region. My objection is to the terminology.
The word…[Read more]

I agree. It always concerns me when people say something like “Nothing man touches is sustainable.” It implies the situation is hopeless and we should resign ourselves to having a negative impact on the environment. I think permaculturists make a pretty strong case that you can change your environment and manitain those changes without having a…[Read more]

Two of the most recent posts; (1) mac salesman back in 84 and (2) typewriter paper salesman……. both are perhaps better analogies. Mac was an out-of-favor product until later. Typewriter may come-and-go but the paper remains the same and is now used by printers instead.
I would accept either scenario over what it too often seems like within…[Read more]

Since I spent much of the past two years un- and under-employed, I can truly appreciate your dismal attitude, but you should only feel like a “typewriter salesman” if what you have to offer is outdated ideas and methods.
Take it back even farther: picture yourself as a Macintosh computer salesman in 1984. ( talk about selling something that…[Read more]
