I did an internship in Beijing in 2007 for 3 months for what used to be the Oriental office of a large American firm. I really enjoyed working in China and actually still have some classmates that are working for the same company since they can’t find work in the USA. For my internship, they provided housing which was amazing and within walking…[Read more]

Hand graphics will always have their place. Computer graphics are great, but in my opinion, when done with a deft hand, actual hand renderings are more emotive and visually interesting than computer graphics, and they can be done just as fast or faster. there are exceptions of course, because I have seen some amazing computer renderings, however…[Read more]

The brain dump is good advice and one that the instructor of my prep course gave us. I’m not sure how helpful my notes were but it was reassuring to know that I didn’t have to worry myself with the information while taking the test.
One minor correction, you’ll have about 1 minute and 13 seconds…not 20 seconds.
When I took the AP test I had…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 1 month agoThanks Charles. The Seattle class had a good group of students. We had a sizable contingent from British Columbia and one person wandered in from Texas! There were many thoughtful questions posed. I enjoyed the experience.

Yes. And less work = fewer actual positions, shrinking firms, fewer firms, shrinking salaries for those who have positions at a firm.
What once felt like a valued and important occupation now feels like the “stepchild”. Trust me Architects and even Civil’s are feeling this too.
Point specifically was that the title “Landscape Architect” in AZ at…[Read more]

That is great advice! I did exactly what was recommended by planet when I took the exam about one year ago and believe me, it helped A TON! I practiced the Brain Dump ahead of time as a simulation before taking practice exams. Once the test began, I don’t know that I referred to my sheet of dumped material, but after writing it down such a short…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 1 month agoThe Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (WASLA) just hosted Ray a couple of weeks ago here in Seattle. He taught his 3-day seminar on Section E. We had a full room and the comments coming in from those who participated have been very good. Everybody commenting said it was very much worth while and well worth the time…[Read more]

The project is going to get built with or without you. If you are part of it you can improve it. If you are not ……..
Stay valued by those who have projects and you will have a job while having the ability to affect projects. It is not a cop-out. It is improvement through participation. The improvement might not be perfection, but it is…[Read more]

Curves can also be a response to what is planted. I’m a big believer in planting for purpose. Often the planting composition that is put together to affect a structure or a space. I like to make planting beds fit a planting rather than use plantings to fill pre-formed beds unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise (such as to purposely…[Read more]

I don’t think there is this big bad statusquo. Things are always changing and I have seen nothing but improvement in how we handle the environment and development over the course of my lifetime. Negativity and paranoia run rampant despite the fact that we are constantly improving every day (landscape architects AND everyone else).
Each project is…[Read more]

how awesome is that? nowadays you’d need to have a railing on everything to prevent people from falling and maybe hurting themselves, and because of litigation, we have neutered an aspect of grand design that Halprin was able to create here, simply awesome.

trace, i got distracted while reading your post, & it took me about five minutes to get through… i don’t know why.
i like contrast and asymmetry, and without question curves juxtaposed with rectilinear forms can create that…
curves and compound curves are most certainly in my playbook.
