Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic ASLA– Relevant? or Exists only to sustain itself? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 6 months ago
I’m not a member, but I don’t think it is irrelevant either. It is the biggest resource we and others have for information on the profession.
I don’t have expectations that it could or even should be what establishes my worth as a professional. It is either something that fits for you and is worth the money or it does not. Right now, it is not a…[Read more] -

“It also protects the reputation of landscape architecture as a profession.”
I’m much more skeptical that landscape architecture has a reputation one way or another as a profession. I do believe that a great deal of people respect what many of us do, but I more and more believe that we are seen as firms and individuals much more so than as a…[Read more] -

If it were not for the license, would you have gone to school for a B(S)LA? I’m not sure that I would have. That being said, I am quite confident that the degree has changed what I do and how I do it. I’m doubtful that I would have gone back to school 12 years later at 33 without the licensing incentive. I was a landsape contractor in the late…[Read more]

I sent an email to both the reporter and the UF this morning. Neither has responded (I imagine that their emails might be a bit full). Almost 2,500 people have commented on the newspaper’s article and over 7,000 “like” it on Facebook.
That much interest ought to have lead to follow up reports. -

They have been changing the laws … to make them more restrictive. Surely, you did not miss ASLA’s “50 by 2010” campaign?

I hope that this story is getting enough attention that the whole story comes out. I have to believe that this was a condition attached to a permit that they violated.
I’d like to think that I can cut down any tree in my yard as long as it is not in a wetland buffer. … even in Massachusetts. -

Hmmmm. I actually did some commercial landscape design in the state of Idaho and had to meet planting standards fifteen years ago. I don’t remember the specifics, but they included shade trees, a certain % of evergreen & deciduous shrubs of a fair size and a high density.

All perfectly practical until someone writes a law. Then you go by the letter of the law.
The biggest things that I’m getting out of this thread are that the subject of licensure is not well taught and not enough people are reading the laws that govern their state in regard to the subject. .
Or there may be a “Pirates of the Caribbean” at…[Read more] -

I think you are right on as far as the safety issue is concerned.
I can’t help but believe that we are missing a part of the story. My guess is that these trees were a required element in a plan approved sometime between 1978 and now. I know that I have had to stuff certain required trees of a certain size for heat abatement and screening well…[Read more] -

Topping is a poor practice that can weaken a tree and make it a hazard, but this church has been continually practicing this hard pruning which then keeps them from ever becoming a hazard. If these trees were required as part of a permitting process for shade or screening a parking lot it is a whole other story. If it is simply control freaks…[Read more]

Jarrod, you are in TN, if I’m not miataken. Tennessee has no definitions in their title/practice act of what landscape architecture is according to the reference on ASLA’s web site.
It has a long list of people who can can do landscape architecture work even though they don’t define what landscape architecture work is (effectively negating it…[Read more] -

It is not an interesting angle. It is an analogy. In neither case does using the professional title apply.

It just occurred to me that I have worked in civil engineering offices full time for a cummulative nine years or so. I am not there to do landscape architecture, but to do civil site plans. It has NEVER crossed my mind to call myself an engineer.
Does anyone understand how immature and insecure this whole notion is? -

I’ve been licenced for 11 years. When I list where I have worked in the past, the above descriptions are what I write.
When you step back and look at the discussions about what one should or should not call himself it seems pretty clear that there is an insecurity and impatience out there in our profession. Perhaps because it is such a long…[Read more] -

Regarding calling yourself an LA – remember who your audience is. You may not be settled on what you should call yourself, but the principal to whom you are applying to sure does. The last thing you want to do is give the impression that you overstate things. They know you have a degree and experience based on your resume. This makes you look…[Read more]

I see the ASLA National Ward winning LAs down here make up post cards and send them to all the other professional offices and have seen some others copy very similar looking card (color and layout). I don’t think they target end clients so much as those higher up the pipeline – archs, engineers, developers,…
