  • Nick,
Why not check zoning maps for cities with TOD’s as part of their master plan. The zoning designations should provide density requirements for residential development. I suggest a minimum density of 10 DU’s/acre to start but most TOD multi-family is probably closer 14 DU/Acre.

  • Your thread is on the right track. Continue to play with the patterns and relationships revealed by existing conditions, blending in project programming elements; as you experiment with their impact on the existing patterns, new patterns and relationships might reveal themselves. It sounds as if you are lost, but that is precisely where you need…[Read more]

  • Nick,
I just wanted to start by letting you know that I am enjoying your angst! Welcome to the design process, especially its first step…project acceptance…the emotional battle a creative spirit must fight until preconceptions are surrendered, the mind relaxes and opens to inspiration. While our insights as experienced professionals might be…[Read more]

  • After reading the thread since my posting yesterday, I have to admit that Andrew’s point sticks. That conclusion begs the question…what is a palatable approach to pressing for change? Will alienatation of those proposed to be excluded be too great a price? Jason’s point about AIA reinforces Andrew’s, and since I do not know if AIA has always…[Read more]

  • Interesting chatter, here.
I always list an alphabet soup of organizational memberships and credentials after my name that do not attach to liability such as ASLA/AICP/LEED AP. I always list all licenses below my name (states & license numbers) because the latter is usually required in some form or other on all professional communications, such as…[Read more]

    Dowell doing good.

  • Brian,
Surprised to see you lament “…misses the design process…” Wake up my man! Do you not believe you were applying the same process to whatever endeavor you undertook? Building custom environments, be it fake rock or silk plants…its still a design problem…how to build it, how to make budget, how to correct the subcontracotor’s…[Read more]

  • As Brian notes, an illuminated approach to researching the subject; Kudos to Mom!

All priors are solid “hard” advice.

Allow me to add this “soft” note…be sure your daughter remains true to her values, interests and talents. Evaluate each program in terms of its support and nurturing of your daughter’s innate instincts and passions. All the…[Read more]

  • Unemployed Grads…

Chin up! I speak from experience. In the 90’s I had a viable design practice in San Francisco that was hit hard by the CA recession. There finally came a time when I had to bite the bullet and find a way to make an income by doing a more humbling job while retaining the flexibility to serve what clients and contracts I still…[Read more]

  • Ryan,
As for turning a powerpoint into a web site, no, I have no answer. I like the notion and will ask about it. If you figure it out, please advise. What I’ve done is refer the viewer of the powerpoint resume to my website where they can see more stuff in detail…and the website is easy to navigate.

  • A website is always a plus, and I maintain one, but I have another wrinkle…PowerPoint. My wife is a high-powered internet media marketer and she showed me a PowerPoint presentation a colleague of hers used as a digital resume, emailing it all over the place in search of media sales positions. I used his as a template and modified it to fit what…[Read more]

  • Yes…the trick is to incorporate anti-grinding features into the design of the wall itself instead of “pasties”; see attached pix. Note some depressions need to be wide enough to trap a board.
