Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Anyone know what the job market is like for an MLA grad? in the forum EDUCATION 13 years, 8 months ago
At the present time, there is slim pickings everywhere. Most adverts are for persons with 3 to 5 years experience. Entry level would be behind that, with those with substantial experience (8yrs plus) having the hardest time finding employment. The reason? They are expensive and there are not enough projects to warrant hiring project managers.…[Read more]

The deal I’ve been finding with salaries is, because many firms are tettering right now, they pay what the market will bear. Some LAs will work for less, just to get the work. I’ve talked with firms who are trying to get mid-level experienced (8-10+ yrs) people to work for near entry wages (3-5 yrs). Because they can.
They really don’t know what t…[Read more] -

Keep in mind, If you are lucky enough to even get an job, you are starting over. Unlike many careers, the design professions are not ones that you can just slide into at the same level you were by getting yet another degree; there is an apprenticeship aspect to it. you will be green and need to learn the profession from the ground up. This, of…[Read more]

This is kind of like ASLA discussing certificates. Not a degree, but a certificate. At least an AA gets you on the road, as you can transfer with many core courses out of the way (many 5 year programs, including where I got my BLA, used to have this model, and somewhat still do). It is ASLA and CLARB allowing the use of nomenclature they probably…[Read more]

Good luck with the financial aid. I’m surprised you could get so much. When I went back, I couldn’t get JACK – SQUAT. Even the bogus ‘gov’t loans’ I was eligible for were a joke. Upwards of 9% interest! When I did my loan calcs from the feds, the repayment of the student loans was the same monthly payment as a new BMW. I have a better rate on one…[Read more]

Or you can get a NAS (network attached storage) which is a bunch cheaper than a full-blown server. Its really just a box with disk drives and a network card in it. You can even convert an old PC that is outdated for day to day work, plus the drives are relatively cheap. There is free software available to turn it into a NAS. This is for local b…[Read more]

Field operations didn’t do the planting Piet Oudolf did that part. In the ‘New American’ landscape style developed by Oehme van Sweden; only its a gigantic intensive green roof.

I went to a presentation this evening at a local college, and the local rep who handles this stuff was there presenting. I’m sold on it, and if I have a project that requires stabilization, will give it a try. They had some pretty impressive local projects.
The system is a stabilized compost/mulch that is blown onto the hillside at a depth of…[Read more] -

It depends on the size of the project. Depending on the mat, it will actually prevent rooting of the seed underneath, making grow in time much, much longer. I don’t know all the details of your project, but if it were me, I’d try to talk my client out of using it. Even using blown straw would do the same thing. Also, how on earth did you get away…[Read more]

I’ve never used these. Either I just sod or hydroseed with a stabilizer. And on those kind of slopes with all kinds of plants on the slopes. But it is just like carpet, you cut a hole in them, I imagine you can make the hole as big as you need and then pin it back down. It just seems like a hassle. Remember that if you are putting anything in of s…[Read more]

Thanks for the post. I’m thinkin’ something along these lines would make a great recurring feature for my henceforth neglected b-log. I’ve got tonnes of stuff like this, and we can all get a laugh while learning something at the same time. I’ll get to work on it when I have some time.

Wow. Is the end piece of stone glued to a 2×4?? I’ve seen so much stuff like this recently, mostly on public works projects.
This would be a quick “well, there’s your problem right there.” -
