I know that them fountains in Millennium Park (they are named the Crown fountain) are specifically designed for the interaction that takes place there. You can see some of the system through the glass block. It is designed to water-park standards of filtration and sterilization (in this case, chlorine) with an automated system for monitoring and…[Read more]

You could also troll free font websites for handwriting fonts you may like. Simply print out an uppercase and lowercase alphabet and start tracing them. After you get the feel of writing them, you can try writitng them without tracing. Of course, you will want to adjust the spacing, but you get the idea. You are building muscle memory instead of…[Read more]

It is not a bad idea with a weekly column to repeat yourself from time to time. You are kind of a calender to people. You can remind them when to perform certain tasks in their gardens when dealing with certain plants, remind them the proper time to prune, or plant, or cut down for regeneration. Then you can add a few little facts here and there.…[Read more]

I think the same can be said with our tools. CAD alllows people to be lazy and take shortcuts and not really know how to design something (especially details). GIS allows all sorts of shortcuts with analysis, and many uses have no idea how to interpret the results of the quiries they run, or even how to check their accuracy. 3D allows some to hide…[Read more]

As someone whofrequently has contractors swearing at him because of the design and attention to detail, I would agree with the premise, just not on all the details. Around here, things are a bit different.
3.Most of the workers here are in their 30’s, the bosses (the ones who know what they are doing) are in their 50s. There is generally one…[Read more] -

They used to offer admission just to the marketplace show floor and JobLink (at least to leave resumes, you have to make appointments for interviews for jobs that don’t exist) as a separate admission without being able to attend the education sessions. I think you could attend the keynotes, but don’t quote me on that. I’m a member and I find the s…[Read more]

It is the standard thesis period. You generally have two semesters to do your thesis in a structured program…the first semester starts with research methods and outlines the project, the second semester is writing the thing. Also, reducing the academic burden by not having a studio to speak of allows the program to be opened up to working pr…[Read more]

An MSLA will allow you teach at most institutions (having a masters had become a common union rule), as well, it allows those with experience to skip the BS of exploratory studios they already did in thier undergrad and get right to the point, a research thesis. I wanted to go back to study new plant materials and environmental psychology, but…[Read more]

According to their website…it still is, like almost all other schools. I guess new MLAs take three? Anyway, I contacted them a while back for my article in LAM and they had stated they were indeed starting a MSLA for those with substantial work experience and don’t need an accredited degree (because they already haveone), slated to start…[Read more]

I can’t imagine that MLA was accredited, there is no way CLARB would recognize that degree. Anyway, now it’s two years only if the arch student had some landscape courses in their undergrad. I know UVA is starting an MSLA for those with an accredited BLA, and that will be about a year. All schools should have this.

There is also the National CAD standard which many gubming agencies subscribe to. That sets up a universal layer management style and naming convention. You can slap together a CD set anyway you want to, but the simpler the better. X-refs are always difficult and you really do have to tailor their use to your office. Once you get going, nobody…[Read more]

Our chapter sends the entries for our awards to another chapter outside of the region for judging. I know many other chapters do this as not to have any appearances of conflicts of interest, as many of the chapter’s leaders also work for firms that submit.

I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. It’s not that there should not be some type of regulation, its they TYPE of regulation in that the QUANTIFICATION and inflexibility of plant lists are wrong way to approach this. And besides, shouldn’t LAs in a planning office make better use of their time and OUR money than counting little circles…[Read more]
