However, over-regulation by over-zealous ‘officials’ like this makes your municipality look like a Soviet-style Politburo and can actually discourage development or improvements, (much the way it has with the ADA). Numerical quantification of vegetation or cover can also be hindrance to good design. Very often, the planting lists are woefully…[Read more] -

Coming from a region synoymous with Crape Myrtles…and where most of them are bred (US Arboretum outside of DC), there is absolutely nothing wrong with the way the church pruned their trees. The city and their “urban forester” are CLEARY in the wrong. These trees wer not topped, as this is one ACCEPTED practice for the care of these trees, p…[Read more]

I used ‘arttist’ in quotations for a reason. The central garden is the weak point of the Getty complex. Doubly so for that HIDEOUS granite block wall where the waterfall is, scaled so poorly it looks like a cheap concrete block wall, and all nicely stained from the minerals in the water. The central stream is weak, and besides the cool rebar tre…[Read more]

Only the bowl-thingie was not conceptually designed by an LA, the rest of the site was designed by OLIN. The bowl-thingie was desinged by an ‘artist’ with the help of a horticulturist during SD and Spurlock Poirier LAs from DD’s onward.
I’d add in Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach and the attached aquarium there. -

Depends on the chapter…we do many things in our communities. We usually have a space or two for parking day, as well as some pro-bono work. Then again, our chapter is very active.

I was implying that nobody wants to go to Delaware, not Winterthur…and the (J/K) following that comment is a “just kidding” marker. I’ve been to Delaware a ton, being just across the Bay Bridge from me and a shortcut to Philly, although I’ve never been to winterhur. I think the admission is kind of steep for what is there that interests m…[Read more]

Winterthur is indeed in Delaware..but nobody really wants to go there (J/K). There is also Nemours in DE, just down the pike from both Longwood and Winterthur. It is decidedly French, kind of like an American Versailles. All are former DuPont estates. It is interesting to drive aournd there and see how planted DuPont is still and how much of it…[Read more]

There is Downtown Philly with the Liberty Bell, The Mint and Independence Hall. Eastern State Penitentiary and the stuff along Ben Franklin Parkway. Valley Forge is just outside of Philly (NW). I would second Longwood Gardens, as well as Falling Water. If your are going through NEPA, there is a great amusement park calle Knoebels. Its in the woods…[Read more]

The local chapters also are a contact point with legislators in your state, and assist to define what parts of practice and LA can or cannot stamp. It is needed because of the vastly more well represented architect and engineer lobby who would just prefer we go away so they get all the work. There is even a fight between ARCHITECTS and ENGINEERS…[Read more]

I tend to agree with the other reviews that the current iteration lacks a bit of focus. It is also waaaay to personal. HR and employers really don’t care about family…and legally have no right to ask about it. I agree with finding a substitute for “objective”, and I have have found its replacement…NOTHING. Objective? You have to get your name known, and that you are in business. People ain’t gonna call you if they don’t know you are there. There is no reason why you should not advertise, just be careful to target to your audience and not overdo it.
You would only look small time if your ad MAKES you look small time. Its best not to be flashy and verbose. A…[Read more] -

No, not avoiding a stigma, just not an effective use of money. If it made them money, they would do it. Marketing depts are supposed to troll for RFPs and foster/maintain client relationships..something an ad in the newspaper cannot do. As I had stated, I’ve seen large firms advertise in print, but only in trade mags. Direct mail is also quite e…[Read more]

I’ve seen print advertising for design/build LAs here (around DC) in newspapers for home landscaping, but there is serious money and a lot of competition here. The status of “A landscape architect designed my yard” is part of the game for the pseudo-riche around the beltway. For the most part, high-end design firms don’t advertise on TV or in…[Read more]

The wind…won’t somebody PLEASE think of the WIND! Whenever you get near large expanses of water you very often get pretty heinous winds much of the year. Add in all the grass open space with no trees or anything else to break up the wind and you have just made it uninhabitable. Plus, having such steep slopes kind of defeats the purpose of…[Read more]

Mike is right. There is a major skills gap. In our cities, the schools can’t even get kids to read, with some having more than 60% dropout rates. You need to be able to read to do these jobs.
Where have all the technical highschools gone? Try to find a skilled machinist. Try to find a welder. Try to find competent construction workers.

I too recall seeing something like this years ago in another program I think was more civil based, but not in autocad. I generally draw a few lines at the measurement I want perpendicular to the curve, do a UCS align to the last space and mirror. Rinse…repeat. Because you are mirroring more spaces each time, you get exponentially faster. Faster…[Read more]
