“It’s as if he listed the most successful design strategies in history and labeled them all as failed, just to see if anyone is paying attention…”
I’d have to furvently disagree with your analysis. Rybczynski is referring to the “gimmick” planning that has been pervasive since the 1960’s. Sure, there are some examples of projects he stat…[Read more] -

Paley Park only exists because of the architecture that surrounds it. I think he was also getting to the point that, like Paley. the architecture defines the space of the highline because there is no other verticality on it. The buildings create enclosure. I’m providing some photos fo y’all. I agree that the neighborhood makes it somewhat…[Read more]

I’ve been to the highline a bunch of times. My last trip to NY was to see some iconic LA installations, how they have held up over the year(s), and what they are like in the winter. (BTW, its freakin windy up there in January)
Never been to Paris, but that park looks really cool. Like most things French, the 2nd Empire architecture is…[Read more] -

Witold is correct, as usual. Right now it is a tourist attraction…people want to see something new, that is the attraction. You do get some good views of some nice architecture, and that is the context that surrounds it. It could work no where else.
Why on earth would you lug yourself up 30′ into the air to walk on an old railroad trestle for…[Read more] -

I agree with many of the suggestions (except for disk or website). If the person selecting the pile for interviews, they will usually pass over anything that does not take 2-3 minutes to review. They will not take the extra step of loading a disc or going to a website. Remember, because of the crappy economy, just about every opening has 100+…[Read more]

My portfoliio is text free, but I have created an 8 page marketing slick for myself in inDesign and Photoshop that is sent via e-mail highlighting particular projects with a paragraph or two of text. This is what I send for an “online portfolio” in order to give the prospective employer and idea of the role I had in the design, when it was b…[Read more]

Professional work first….always. Your school work is, well, academic. I group mine by project type, so I essentially have chapters. I don’t think I actually have any school work in mine at all, but I have substantial experience with many built works. It is good to keep your portfolio purged. If you are working, unless it is a substantial…[Read more]

Keep in mind the density of firms around DC. I think DC region (particularly Alexandria, VA) has the highest concentration of firms including large & big name firms of anywhere in the nation. Thats one reason why I live here. So, of course, there would be the most numbers of openings for a geographic region, but there is also the highest co…[Read more]

This is where those with planning degrees wound up from my generation, doing GIS data entry in a municipal planning office. Mostly converting paper records to digital. The actual planning was done by architects and landscape architects brought in as consultants.

Sure, I’ve been to Vegas, and out into the desert (in August, no less). Thats kind of the point of the joke, you have to force stuff to grow there well. And the post I was replying to was that the compound OBL was hiding in had horrid landscape. They invested money in the 15′ high wall with concertina wire rather than a lawn and palm trees. GIS has very limited applications in the private sector (more in the public sector) because it is very expensive for the results it yeilds. It seems to be most beneficial for regional and super-regional planners so they can create kinda-fancy graphics. I, too , ran into the overemphasis on GIS on a recent stint into an MLA. In certain sectors of t…[Read more]

Yes, the caps-lock was indeed warranted in this quotation. -

I think she is referring to the newfangled “natural play” philosphy. You know, kids jumping around on logs and building slides into fake hills with fake “nature” all around them. Things no insurance company would ever insure for a public playground. There are reasons why public playgrounds have evolved into the rubber tiled, bright colored pile of…[Read more]

Unfortunately with the way education and certain aspects of society are, you get more than a trophy just for showing up. Everybody is special, yet no one is exceptional, you are the best at everything you do. You are entitled for a $100k a year job right out of school and they should just GIVE you a license. What exam?
