Another nice thing about this profession, we don’t have to retire…ever. We can consult or freelance part time later on in years. We don’t retire, we expire.

Not a great deal of open jobs here in DC! Lately, most of the openings seem to be in CA. But no matter where you look, there just aren’t jobs. And in areas like DC with a HUGE concetration of both LAs and firms, competition is fierce.

First, a quick Google shows the EPI report to be a non credible source…EPI is a pro-labor organization with most of its contributions coming from labor unions.
There are also serious flaws with the EPI study. One, it does not take into account additional compensation, such as much higer benefit contributions for the public sector. Their m…[Read more] -

Try being LAID OFF for YEARS as so many LAs are right now!!!!!!!
I feel NO sympathy for the Peoples Republic of California. There isn’t any more money to bleed from the taxpayer stone, and businesses have fled by the thousands. The people made their own mess, now they have to wallow in it.

LAs as a profession have to work twice as hard to get noticed among architects and engineers. Know your sh*t, be nothing but professional. develop a healthy ego. and build your reputation among your peers and allied professions. Be the bridge.

The stats in the article came from the Department of Labor and their Bureau of Labor Statistics…
Which, from their unemployment rate numbers, are underestimated. -

Don’t dismiss the article because it was in the Journal. The Wall Street Journal is the most repected business publication in the US, and the WOMAN that wrote the article heads up a 5010(c)(3) who promotes independent womens business issues. I’m sure YOUR statistics are irrefutable.
The point in posting was to broaden prosepectives, and that th…[Read more] -

I’ve been out of the market for these for a while, but by a quick look this seems like a good package and a pretty good deal.
One thing you may want to consider is getting a “superzoom” lens that goes all the way from 18mm to 250mm instead of the two-lens setup. But as a package, that seems to be a bargain. Also, shop around, even at local c…[Read more] -

What are you planning to shoot? As much as I like the G11 (I plan on getting one eventually), a DSLR might be better to take pictures of built work, as you can get a wide array of lenses. Namely, WIDE angle. The less expensive DSLRs (Anything below a 5D) has a crop factor as the sensor is not the same size as 35mm film, so the 18mm kit lens is…[Read more]

Same with craft paper, and craft paper can be electrostatically printed on without jamming the machine. I used to do it all the time in the oversize machines in Kinkos. Works great!

I’ve met Gehl, and he has high praise for LAs, as he thinks we are the only design profession that actually thinks about human interaction and human scale in design. We design with cognizance on how pedestrians will experience our work. Not true of planners who participate in ‘airplane design’ so things look good from above, but may not fun…[Read more] -

Or an IT manager, it takes constant updating (server restarts) and there are quite a few flaws that you have to get technical assitance to perform, very time consuming. Plus, it is a heavy program, meaning it is not very efficient and hogs resources. Studiometry looks like a nice suite of simpler, more efficent software.

There are a few systems out there. I’m not familiar with this one, but it looks quite good. A bit on the pricey side, but I guess compared to what else is out there, not too bad (and many other systems are subscription for upgrades). Stay away from Deltek…it is an unweildy beast!

Nothing can be done without prohibiting settlement along shores. In much of Japan, high seawalls already existed and were utterly useless againts such a powerful tsunami. Like Andrew said, it can be relatively easy to manipulate the community input process. It is done all the time. All it takes is a silver tongue and the following process.
1. If you are a dragon-blooded design warlock such as myself, you already know the design before you put pen to paper (I don’t need to do endless drawings to develop concepts…[Read more] -

If your drawings have any complexity (or x-refs/blocks), you will need a beefier processor than the i3.
Also, make sure the laptop has a SEPARATE graphics processor AND separate memory, many of the i3 models (since they are the the least powerful) do not have this. They share the graphic processing on the main CPU and share the 4gb m…[Read more] - Load More
