Agreed. The ‘Objective’ heading and text seems a bit redundant for a professional level resume. We all know what the objective is…to get a job.

There are a few schools of thought on this, but I would strongly consider de-personalizing your portfolio. No personal photo, nothing about coffee or cycling. Just the work. And perhaps larger images. If you race with your bike, that would be mentioned somewhere on the resume in just a short line, but don’t include hobbies. Keep it all business.…[Read more]

The unemployment number is slightly lower for the building sector, but that is because people are leaving the AEC industry in droves.

Did you look into the program with concerns to ecological restoration curriculum before you started? Most LA schools will not give you a good specialized education in that, and it seems like you have an aversion to the real fundamentals of the profession. If you think it is bad now, just wait until you get into a studio. LA is mostly about d…[Read more]

We are kind of having the same discussion in the US Congress right now with the transportation bill. There are a lot of ‘questionable’ projects that have a poor track record of sucess. ASLA is trying to get as much money as possible for things like streetscape renovations and bike lanes, which would help a few (the last round of transport spending…[Read more]

I know a few good lawyers as well, mostly real estate, that provide a valuable service and one is very design oriented for what he does. He had handled a lot of pioneering stuff with brownfields and liability.
Then there was the ambulance chaser in my hometown, who had replaced the car stereo in his dated SL500 with a Cobra police radio…[Read more] -

Better idea: “Loser pays” or the English Rule. Most countries in the western world use a fee structure that makes the loser pay of the case pay the legal bills and court costs of the victor. (Thank you trial lawyer lobby). This all but eliminates frivolous lawsuits.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Intellectual Property Rights in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 12 years, 5 months ago
This is common language in the contract, and it is due to the whole “prototype” design practice, mostly used by chain restaurants and retail stores. It is in the contract because they tend to build one of four or five slightly modified versions of the same design, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of buildings. Generally, with these, new sets of…[Read more]

You DO HAVE a copyright on the drawings for unplublished works when you create them, and more limited protection when you publish the work (give it to the client) However, the copyright only prevents the client from making another copy of the drawings and giving it to their shop to make an estimate. If the shop is using the original drawings,…[Read more]

That has to be spelled out either in the contract that the information is not be used by anyone else, or in a disclaimer on the drawings themselves. If there is no contract or disclaimer…there is no copyright.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic federal aid money for professional development in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 5 months ago
Check with your local unemployment office. Most of the federal funds for professional development are distributed through them for “workforce development.” I recently obtained my Green Roof Professional certification, both the classes and the exam, from a County workforce development grant with federal funds. It was a structured program (they h…[Read more]

I mean to say the UK is more like an apprenticeship, where the US is more like a regular college degree with a lot of “filler”. From what else I remember, the UK is very hort-heavy. The US…not so much.

I had to Google it because I forgot the details. The CMLI is akin to the US’s CLARB. They set the educational standards and govern the licensing in the UK. According to Google, they require secondary professional education (like a Masters) and a 7 year apprenticeship. Wow. We have it easy over here (and it just keeps getting easier). From what I u…[Read more]

I don’t know if this is still true or not, but a British collegue of mine a number of years ago had stated that American educated LAs are very desireable in the UK because of the slightly different education structure and base education. I’m not thinking their economy is any better than ours, but at least they are not tied to the Euro, soon to be…[Read more]

A lot of people’s aprehension comes from using the really old stuff which never really anchored well and would eventually work loose. They were probably also using residential-grade, which is much, much thinner. If you use a good quality THICK commercial edging that has a proper fastening system, you will be just fine. Aluminum is a good…[Read more]

It is very entertaining, especially coming from that world. i think LAs could learn something from them though. We need a bit mor4 agressive attitude and unabashed egotistical bantering. It would be good for the profession. We are too nice.
