You must also keep in mind that hand graphics are very expensive for a firm. Time is money, which is why there are very few architectural renderers in business anymore. Almost every firm used to have one, or they farmed it out. Now, if they want hand graphics, or even 3D work, much is farmed out to Asia.
But by developing a quick method of drawing…[Read more] -

All you have to do is go there and see it yourself, and look beyond the plants into the planitng structure and environment. I also saw them building the second section and know whats underneath the lush plantings. There are lots of irrigation lines running in the growing media. The “friends” can claim whatever they want, but just because they say…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Image quality when saving InDesign doc as PDF Interactive vs. PDF Print in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 6 months ago
Saving to bitmap is one of the first problems. .bpm files really lose a lot of clarity and resolution. They are fine for low-res stuff like web pages. Stick with large, high quality jpegs, or if you need absolute clarity, TIFs. Also, do not scale the image to export into InDesign, assign the size in InDesign and let it compress the image file on…[Read more]

This is not a book that you will find at Barnes and Noble that the average consumer (public you speak of) will even attempt to look at. This is an industry-specific publication. Using a ‘flashy’ well known project for the cover is entirely irrelevant to book sales. In fact, there could have been NO cover image at all.
It is not so much the time…[Read more] -

How about any one of the SSI pilot projects, which would actually represent the content of the book? Three have been certified so far.

You can also right click (for those of us with a right mouse button, sorry Mac people) and select it from there. Right mouse button…one of many reasons I havn’t switched to Mac.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Looking for a good anti-graffiti product for a concrete wall. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 6 months ago
There are lots of different anti-grafitti sealers on the market, from acrylic to a glass-like product. It is failrly common and most good concrete supply stores should carry it. It is generally applied with a handheld pump sprayer.Google anti-grafitti concrete sealer. It won’t magically wash away when it rains, but it can be cleaned, sometimes…[Read more]

Nice.
It will be interesting to see how well it holds up, plant wise. The growing media looks very shallow for the type of plants they put on the roof.
Thanks for the post. -

I’m not familiar with how it works with a mac, but on a PC, Acrobat installs itself as a printer, just as an inkjet or laser printer would. You go to “print” and choose “AdobePDF” where you choose your usual printer and choose your printing options. Either color or monochrome, and the printed resolution and post script options. There are presets…[Read more]

You will manually scale them in InDesign when you place them in the document, provided you have the document size set correctly. You can right click on them an select “fit to frame or something to that effect. Just do not insert the PDFs into a PDF document, because they will insert at full scale.. My brochure and portfolio are full bleed (no…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Workstation build and Software in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 6 months ago
I found it much less expensive to purchase a machine than try to build one, and I’ve built most of my old machines for the past 15 years. I could not even come close when trying to match part for part with a mass builder. You used to be able to build a more powerful machine for less than it cost to buy a basic-duty machine, but not anymore. I…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Sketchup acquired by Trimble in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 7 months ago
I’m surprised AutoDesk didn’t snatch it up and shutter it or add in a bunch of useless new features that take vast more processing power and raise the price a few thousand dollars.
I’m not familiar with Trimble that much, but they primarily seem to a hardware company specializing in GPS. Hardware companies and mass software companies rarely g…[Read more] -

This is not saying that ASLA does not do some good work; it is the organization that fought for and defends licensure that makes our profession an actual profession. And by all means, get involved with ASLA if you feel the need to support the only organization that supports us. I am actively involved, at both the state and national level. Such is…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Documenting Work Experience: What are the Categories? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 12 years, 7 months ago
I do to, but designing structures and designing the land are two different educational and professional disciplines. And from vast experience (I have always worked in architecture offices), Architects clearly do not have any idea how to do the latter.

wow, did I ever make some typos in there! It should state that any degree OTHER than a BLA, MLA or certain CLARB accredited BSLAs will not qualitfy you to take the LARE. You will need to go the other route of working under a LA for a decade before you would qualify for a license. The language is vague to allow for some flexibility, but the…[Read more]

A BSArch is not considered an equivalent degree in my state.Almost any degree other than an BLA, MLA, or certain BSLAs or sometimes an ornamental horticulture degree will qualify you to sit for the LARE. Exceptions are indeed rare, and must be accompanied by substantial experience. In most cases, a BSArch is not a professional level degree that w…[Read more]

It brings up a good point, though. I used to work in architecture offices, and most of my friends are architects, so I know the pains of NCARB. I do like their system of maintaining hours and CEUs online (yea, the transition was tough, though). I had to fill my hours paperwork out after the fact. It would have been nice to fill it out as I was…[Read more]
