There are an awful lot of variables to make this type of planting work, not just the plant material.
I work in the mid-atlantic, so for large shade trees, I stick with deeper rooting hearty forest/pioneer trees like Tulip Trees, London Planes, certain oaks (willow oak does well here) and birches.
I try to stay away from top-rooting trees l…[Read more] -
Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Documenting Work Experience: What are the Categories? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 7 months ago
The work experience breakdown is up to the State licensing board, as is the method for recording it. For me, it was simply filling out copied forms the State mailed me when I requested an application to sit for the LARE. Every state is different. We are not anywhere close to be as advanced or organized as Architects when it comes to exams or q…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Anyone know what the job market is like for an MLA grad? in the forum EDUCATION 13 years, 7 months ago
You pretty much need a PhD for anything other than an adjunct nowandays even with academia. Which means you will still need another job besides. Its about “how many PhDs per student” stats, not the qualifications of the professors.
I agree in trying to get where a large concentration of LA offices are. DC has a ton (mostly around Alexandria, VA)…[Read more] -

Here is an LA economic forecast.
1. Europe will continue to provide economic stresses on the US markets, thanks to Spain, Portugal, Italy. Greece, and to a lesser extent, France. Major political upheaval in countries like Greece or Spain due to severe budget cuts will cause further instability. Meaning less investment. If they don;t change, they w…[Read more] -

There are doomsdayers indeed, the same way that there are eternal optmists. The realists are the ones you need to pay attention to.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic SNAFU: What are some of the snafues or screw-ups that you had to fix and deal with? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 7 months ago
90% Civil problems. It got so bad that every single project I was involved with, I had to review the civil drawings and send them back redlines to fix. Some of them were greatly offended. I didn’t care. These were both within the past few years.

Mostly, these items don’t look too bad, and you have to remember the audience and what they will use to view. Mostly, on screen resolution is good enough to get your foot in the door. Then you whip out your full res (and in my case, huge) portfolio. Many prospective employers set a size cap to their e-mails (sometimes a little as 2megs) for…[Read more]

Be careful about using a dropbox link. Many potential employers will not take the extra step to click on anything or go anywhere else to download a file. As they are sonetimes now dealing with hundreds of applications, they won’t take the extra time and will just pass you over. If they ask for digital work samples, send them a file as an a…[Read more]

Those printers that do post cards and bidness cards are offset press places. You might be able to find a “digital printer” in your area, they usually have good stuff and know how to use it. Make sure you say printer and not press…two different things (digital presses are awesome, BTW) All of your profiles should be set to the same sRGB (usuallt…[Read more]

I agree with Chris, you are calling the wrong kind of printer. What size paper are you looking to print on, and what type of image do you want to see (photo quality?) As far as ink jets, Canon or Epson are far and away the best for imaging, but cost a ton, and cost even more to operate. Some of the more expensive HPs can also be good (they make a…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Should the ASLA focus on employment for LAs? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 8 months ago
Ummmm, the ASLA does in deed have lobbyists, and does indeed lobby! They even have a Lobby Day where they ask LAs from around the country to come to DC and meet with their representatives to promote LA.
Many states also lobby their State Houses (I know mine does) and have events. Its not as easy as just saying “we’re going to do this now.”…[Read more] -

Some places are also now offering a 1 year MLA or MSLA for those who may have a 5yr BLA and substantial experience, kind of like a professional MBA. For those who are experienced and licensed, there is no need to rehash old classes just to get an MLA when you already HAVE a professional (and more in depth) BLA. The educational structure of this…[Read more]

Let alone rip-offs. People bought prints for high hundreds to thousands of dollars expecting them to be worth something someday, but ended up with the Hummel figures or NASCAR plates of the art world. Not saying his paintings were terrible, if that is your taste, but he sold hundreds of “hand touched prints” for exorbitant amounts of money. And…[Read more]

Well, the thing with Blue Gramma, you will need at least a deep semi-intinsive, if not a full blown intensive green roof. Prarie grasses, which Blue Grama is, have deep roots to hunt for water. It is heavy soil because it needs organics, which hold water. You need to have a support to act as mini retaining walls, so there will be “fins” that…[Read more]

Both are great schools, but if you want to wind up teaching in academia, there is nothing better on your resume than GSD. I’d love to go there, but as others have mentioned, cost is a huge factor. The ROI for an MLA isn’t that great.

Well, the design build market around where I hang my had is woefully oversaturated, and competition would be very tough. There is no other accomodation in the ADAAG other than truncated domes for detectable warning, that is pretty much the only thing in the ADAAG that does not have a substitue. Also, the DOT has adopted the 2′ deep truncated dome as the universal tactile warning device. There is no substitution.
