Mary Beth,
This Article may be helpful to you.
In my experience, people who are not members of ASLA or who do not want to emphasize their membership use RLA. RLA of course means “Registered Landscape Architect”. ASLA designates a person who is a full member of ASLA and has a degree or certificate from an accredited program with at least 3 years of…[Read more] -

Municipalities have several tools to help them make infill projects more attractive to developers; tax incentives (which may have limits) and federal and state enhancement grants to improve existing infrastructure, but there are also other sources of funding such as Tax Increment Financing. Making it easier for developers to do infill projects is…[Read more]

Here’s an example of the political aspect of planning and landscape architecture:
Nrschmid:
“However, some of them [landscape architects] struggle to find the underlying meaning in the ordinances and what has been established by plan commissions as precedent. For example, one community’s ordinance might allow Betula nigra (River birch) but the r…[Read more] -

ALLEN COMPTON, STUDENT ASLA of CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, POMONA won an ASLA Award in 2005 for Site Unseen
I watched a screening of it at LABASH ’06 and I was impressed. I agree that video is an under-utilized presentation tool.

I like the conversation that is going here, everyone’s making some pretty good points…
We have all heard that the U.S. economy is heavily dependent on oil which is considered a non-renewable resource, but what does that actually mean? It means in 2007 Petroleum accounted for almost 40% of our total Primary Energy Consumption.
Of that amount…[Read more] -

Thanks for your response Rico, I think you’re right it is important to stay positive when facing our frustrations with certain policies that guide development. It’s also good to hear that Americans designers aren’t the only ones who sometimes feel forced to compromise good design for perceived economic benefits.
I think we need to start arming…[Read more]

I do not have any direct experience with Filterra products. I was able to find some scientific evidence that they use to back up their claims.
UVA Dept. of Civil Engineering White Paper
It appears that their Bacterra media has even more scientific credibility.
I was not able to find any other independent studies other than the ones shown on…[Read more]

Well, that wasn’t he part of the quote that I was trying to emphasize, I’m not going to stand here and say that the government has cornered the market on corruption, the argument really isn’t about morality, its about social functions.
You are entitled to your assessment of Jane Jacob’s work but her contribution to urban design theory is…[Read more]

It does make sense Lisa; I wonder what kind of scientific studies have been conducted on this topic.
If there are any MLA students reading this, I think Lisa has come up with a potentially award winning thesis topic. So you better give her credit. =)

Good points, I suppose another important distinction to draw as we continue the conversation is that a planner’s role will vary greatly depending on if he or she is employed by a municipality or by a private sector consulting firm.
I suppose what I meant in my earlier post is that I have been impressed by the work of the private sector planners…[Read more]

Jay Everett replied to the topic Organic Plants in the forum PLANTS & HORTICULTURE 16 years ago
Even if you can’t get “organic” plants (I’m assuming this means that there is some sort of certification process) if you can just find native plants for your area then that is a BIG step in the right direction. From my perspective America is coming around to this “progressive” idea. Even here in Nashville in the middle of a huge “Red” state we…[Read more]

Jay Everett replied to the topic Tech Question: ROW PLANTING in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years ago
In general YES, it is allowed, and most of the time it is a very good idea. However as you suspected, this can be really different from place to place.
In some municipal districts in Middle Tennessee we have had to fight to have street trees allowed in the public right of way (these are usually planted in 5′-10′ grass strips between the back of…[Read more]

nrschimid,
I know a few LA/Planners. AICP is a cool credential to have behind your name, a good friend of mine (who is a planner) says it stands for “Any Idiot Can Plan”.
Planning is an interesting subject. There are many professions that recognize the importance of good planning in our built environment but we take many different avenues to…[Read more]

Mack,
I think Errors and Omissions Insurance is usually a policy that the firm keeps on itself, you may change Insurance companies from time to time but the insurance is usually constant. I don’t believe it is available on a job by job basis.

Jay Everett replied to the topic CLARB Council Record in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 16 years, 1 month ago
A CLARB record is required in Mississippi, but only for initial licensure. I finally called CLARB today to find out if they were waiting for anything else from me so they would send out the forms to my references.
They told me they were waiting on my signed affidavit, I told them that I mailed it overnight last wednesday and suddenly they found…[Read more]

Great topic Brandon. It doesn’t surprise me that there has been so little response. With only 2 years of experience I am afraid that I cannot be of much help to you, although I will say that this is one area of practice that I was woefully unprepared for out of college. I had no idea how most landscape architects actually got work, got paid, and…[Read more]

Thanks Brad. I had heard that Mississippi required a council record, but then again, I have heard that it is not required. At any rate, CLARB has transmitted my scores to the Mississippi Board of Architecture (LA Advisory Committee) so I’m sure that I will know for sure in a few days. So what is the state’s incentive to require a council record?…[Read more]
