Have you seen many of the new outdoor malls(I am thinking of Maple Grove, MN)? Designed with street scapes that have pavers, fountains, extensive plantings, concert venue, firepits, music. Just a thought. That concept probably works better in TX than in MN. Is this a school project or have you graduated already?

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic CAD programs ? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 1 month ago
It is a good not perfect system for the site portion of projects. The 3-d site stuff is a little cumbersome, but the auto scheduling and 3d families well make up for the extra time dealing with the difficult topo. It is also helpful to be in the same program as the Architects in my office.
Planting plans – we have done extensive customazation of…[Read more] -

1. When we have to use CAD our office still has some licenses for Microstation. I have used a few CAD programs(Landscape Pro, Dynascapes, Autocad(multiple versions), Microstation). We moslty use the BIM program Revit in our office unless it is a overly simple project, than we may revert back to Microstation.
2. Not a big CAD fan. The smart…[Read more] -

Love the idea of getting input from students and client. It is amazing how well things go when people have ownership of them.

This would be a great opportunity to explore the design process.
Maybe you can even do a little research on design methods and see what works best for you.
In general for a basic design process
1 and 2 can run concurrently in your case since you already have a site.

I have considered it. Never hurts to have another certification. As I have learned in the past. I learn a lot just studying for the test and then I have a certification that does not really benefit me all that much.

I do not know how to even begin, to be a voice of reason on this one.

So you would need to be a member of ASLA to have initials that designate licensure? I like the idea that ASLA is a voluntary organization of Landscape Architects and not a governing body!!!

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Studio Project leads to a larger question in the forum EDUCATION 13 years, 1 month ago
That is a really open ended question? Look at the prototype drawings that retail and hotel chains put together. On them you would see a planting plan. That does not list specific plants, but style and size of plants. It would say show a shade tree at this location, flowering shrub at another spot. On the site plan, the signage, lighting, c…[Read more] -
Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Digital Portfolios in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 1 month ago
Can’t hurt, just don’t go crazy and spend all sorts of time doing it. I would recommend only showing absolutely the best work. It is better to have five awesome images than thirty so-so images. Mainly an employer just wants to know that you can do the task they would be hiring you for. Unless you are going to be the design principal, your designs…[Read more]

I have met others in that spot. There is just so much redundancy in the 4 plus 3 option for arch/la school. I like the 5 year masters with an option to stop after 4 years.

Is the undergrad Arch. degree accredited? Would it be enough for you to sit for the Arch tests?

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Is it possible to get the expirience without the credentials? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 1 month ago
I am in Minnesota and one of my study partners for the LARE passed his tests at the same time I did. We both applied for registration and I recieved my number right away and he was denied for only having an unaccredited Envrionmental Design Degree(LA undergrad degree) and not a BLA or MLA. He was able to get registered in a different state, but…[Read more]

Like Sara said you can get there, it is just a little easier and faster when you do have an accredited degree. Also when it comes time to move up you may be passed over for someone less experienced that does have credentials. So make a goal of what you want and see how far you can go with what you have.
I know from experience with colleagues that…[Read more] -

You could try working your way in on a design build landscape crew or find something else that is close to the field, but not necesarily in the field.

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Professional Boundaries for Landscape Contractors in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 2 months ago
I think the biggest problem is being undermined by the contractor. The designer has the relationship and knows that the clients budget this year is to have x done and lighting in the future. It comes accross really unprofessional to have a contractor contradicting or stepping on the toes of the designer. Since even if it is a sub, to the homeowner…[Read more]
