mauiBob replied to the topic Non-RLA's using the title Landscape Architect in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 6 months ago
Craig, as I stated here weeks ago (can’t believe this thread is still going) that its all about ego. Calling yourself a landscape ARCHITECT is more impressive than landscape DESIGNER. When I was a landscape designer several years ago, I introduced myself as an Urban designer…which was actually true and printed on my business card.

mauiBob replied to the topic If you are not a registered LA, why haven't you gotten the stamp? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 6 months ago
Let me get this straight…you go from Hawaii to Arizona and now live in Alaska?! Alas-freakin-ka? Chup, they should automatically give you a license for doing the unthinkable! Honestly, it would take a $150k/year salary for me to venture into Alaska. Hiking up the summit of Mt McKinley is the only thing I want to see there.
I didn’t take the exam…[Read more] -

Maybe true, but you’re missing the point here. Your job “title” may say Landscape Architect, but does your business card have RLA with a number after your name? And try getting your designs through the permitting process without a stamp. My first job out of school was with a small company and my business card had Project Manager on it. Even though…[Read more]

Yes, no kidding Jason! Read all the designers who want to be called Landscape Architect under the thread “Non LA’s using the title LA”. That is our society today. Did you read the recent article about the retired man in Michigan who won a $2 million dollar lottery? Because of a loophole in the system, he is able to collect welfare and food stamps…[Read more]

I can’t believe this thread is still going strong!! For a question so simple…you either have a license and call yourself a Landscape Architect or you haven’t earned the title yet! End of debate.

mauiBob replied to the topic Internship -5 years experience in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 7 months ago
That’s what you call getting experience and paying them with intern salary! Those are the firms you stay away from on long term basis.
For me, the South Carolina Planner job is worst! The only person able to fit in that candidate description lives in someone’s imagination. I showed a few co-workers and everyone laughed. -

Dan, once upon a time, I thought like you because I was still in school too. Those school projects are fake, no budget, spending countless hours with no hard criticism don’t adequately prepare you for things to come. In 10 years, after dealing with real world landscape limitations and Urban Design review boards…come back to your youthful wisdom…[Read more]

mauiBob replied to the topic Hunting in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 7 months ago
In my 12 years of experience in landscape architecture, I have yet to work with someone who’s been with the same company for longer than 15 years. How’s that for stability in this field? Principals have left their positions to start new firms or join another. The lone exception is the Principal/Owner/Founder.
I’m fortunate to be currently working…[Read more] -

That is what I suggested in my earlier comment to hire a landscape architect/designer. A simple pool, turf, gazebo, patio chairs, flowering shrubs and palm trees could’ve soften up the place and maybe make the CIA pass on it as a terrorist compound. The place was screaming “Mister Terrorist” lives here.
Depends on comparison. It was luxurious due…[Read more] -
mauiBob replied to the topic GIS in landscape architecture in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 7 months ago
I agree 100%. The County employs GIS technicians and I consult with them on regular basis for the heavy duty data work. I use it (ArcView) occasionally for land use exhibits and analysis. In the last 3 years, while jobs for landscape design have dried up, I’ve seen several steady flows of open GIS positions in the public sector.

Jason, have you ever been to Las Vegas? Take a drive around North Las Vegas. Don’t forget Dubai too. All you need is money, water and you can grow anything anywhere! Obviously he had money to live in that estate and assistance from the Pakistan Govt.

DNA takes weeks when its not really a top priority or if the workers are union members. I think this event was very high to get it done! They were aboard a military ship, so they had all the necessary equipment.

How do we know for certain that his body was dumped out at sea? You actually trust the Govt? What if…if they kept the body and are now transporting it to Area 51 in the Nevada desert. Who knows. The Bin Laden estate could’ve used some good landscaping.
Can the Govt now stop sending billions of $$$ to aid Pakistan? How do you send all that…[Read more] -
mauiBob replied to the topic Edging? in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 14 years, 7 months ago
Yes…but doesn’t everything depend on maintenance, including shrubs and trees? A shovel cut edge looks like the wild forest after time without proper maintenance too. This thread is on edging for playgrounds, not the philosophy of playground design and play structures. Maybe because I almost never designed any projects in these frost environments…[Read more]

Pakistan wanted him and kept him in that luxury estate. Not the living in a cave we thought of the last 10 years. I think there’s a lot more people out there who follow him than you think.

It was a joke. Prices will continue to increase because Oil companies are loving the amount of profit. After Libya, then what? Throw billions of $$$ at Iran, Yemen, Omar? Sudan, Niger and many other places also have ruthless dictators. When is it enough already?

Okay…so does this mean gas prices will drop? And is America going to stop spending trillions of $$$ for military bases across the world?

Mike, I love it when people still in school start to tell RLAs about “real world” design and details! I guess those fantasy projects from school adequately prepare students for the real thing. The topic was edging and not the actual play equipment. You are off in a tangent. Did you even see the photos I posted? And what kid is going to trip on a…[Read more]

I have NEVER seen the plastic edging type surround an entire play equipment. If this edging is used, then its only found in front of shrubs in the perimeter.

mauiBob replied to the topic Edging? in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 14 years, 7 months ago
You and Andrew simply have different experiences with edging in general than myself. With all the fun, colorful play equipment around, why would any kid play with a plastic edging? There’s nothing beyond the edging to play in. Some clients really do want it and if its done correctly, you don’t even notice it.
