Colroado Springs, eh?
The army may be expanding, but last I heard they were shutting the streetlights out at dusk and cut the parks dept.

I guess I am being intentionally vague to some degree.
I want the site to function as a extension of my portfolio/resume as well as marketing tool for independent design work.
My objective is to showcase design and visualization skill.
Thanks for the comments.. -

I dodnt put work experience up partially because I didnt think it was relevant if I was using the site to market myself as an independent designer/contractor, also I wanted that page to be pretty brief and I could only fit so much info on one slide. I may add a link like thebiography link at the bottom right that points to a separate ‘experience’…[Read more]

Thanks.
I have tooled around with flash off and on for a few months. I would say, dont get bogged down in really complex flash operations. The stuff I have on my site is really basic flash, slideshow with no controls, little animation.
I probably wouldnt even suggest messing around with flash controls too much as the coding starts getting p…[Read more] -

Thanks all for the great feedback.
I agree that the timing on the homepage slideshow might need some tweaking. The idea was just what Nick mentioned..just glimpses or ‘teasers.’
The resume and about page certainly need some editing-duly noted.

I just picked up extra part time hours at a local office in addition to my regular job which has been fluctuating from 25-40 hours/week.
I know that another interior designer in town is working at three different architecture offices averaging a total of 40-60 hours a week.
From what I hear in my area work is definitely picking up–whether t…[Read more] -

Thanks for the replies.
I’m not sure all that much is necessary to be hired as a design/graphics consultant. What does a town require when they commission a public artist or otherwise?
My objective would be to gain some credibility as a designer whether or not my ideas are utilized later, not to be involved with documentation and ad…[Read more] -

I have a couple of simple animations on my personal site. I think the home page and portfolio page and also in my folio here–theyre not photoreal, just meant to show the idea.

For what its worth..
I bought the Mike Lin book 10 years ago when I was a landscape designer before going back to school. I just read and copied what I saw..over and over until it started to look like the images in the book. I like Jon’s comments–I agree that there is a difference between hand ‘rendering’ and hand ‘sketching.’ Along those same…[Read more] -

Heres a fun experiemnt we can all try–
go to one ofthe architecture forums liek archinect.com and ask something like’how do you make your renderings?’
You’ll almost certainly get 25 responses about processors, resolution, and ray tracing.
Do it by hand. Has anyone given you any instruction on perspective? -

That’s what I’ve heard time and again. It just seems strange to me..that many people, no creative thinkers??
Sure, my only real point was that sometimes it can be better to wait it out, albeit a different situation. -

Ihada job offer from a China firm not too long ago–Shenzhen and Shanghai.
I declined the offer for some of the previously stated reasons–Lower then average wage, loong hours, and evidently little or no time or place for outdoor recreation!
I had several rounds of phone interviews where the interviewers openly told me that they typically w…[Read more] -
nca replied to the topic Portfolio Websites? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 9 months ago
So many portfolio layouts I see seem so unnecessarily confusing.
When I see a portfolio/project layout that is difficult to understand I question whether the designer had a clear direction and understanding of what they were doing as well. It also seems that 99% of the portfolios I look at it my spare time are loaded with digital graphics, but…[Read more] -

Well, maybe I’m wrong about the unemployment thing.
I thought that you could not be self employed while collecting unemployment, but maybe it’s that you cant collect unemployment benefits from self employment? Dont know. I know that you can get part time unemployment.
As far as expenditures–I think a lot of people think they need more than t…[Read more] -

Keith,
You make some good points and generally I agree, but how can you mention obtaining legal copies of CAD and utilizing unemployment benefits to start your own firm in the same breath? Using unemployment when you are technically self-employed is illegal, though I realize the reality is that many professionals are doing this.
There are w…[Read more] -

I agree Jason. ‘Design Restraint’ is an important skill that I think comes with experience.
I agree completely that there is an underlying ‘style’ or ‘unity’ to their body of work, whether they like it or not. I picked it up on my own, so obviously it’s there. I like a lot of their work too by the way.
As far as a unifying theme to field o…[Read more] -

I met david rubin a couple of years ago at CSU where he gave a lecture. He is the newest principal of Olin. I came to the conclusion on my own that if Olin has a style it is ‘classical or traditional.’ I asked Rubin about this and he vehemently denied having a style, especially that one…for what its worth.

Personally, probably alot more than Corner, lol.
My point is that Corner and Waldheim are academians that need to bring their overly contrived theories to the built environment. Someone said once that if you can’t explain your ideas so that your grandma understands, then you probably don’t undertsand what you’re saying either.

nca replied to the topic Can you suggest a different material? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 9 months ago
Certainly there would be less labor. Excavation, base prep, materials and delivery. You could set the stones in an hour or two with a skid. Depends on the availability of the material in that area. Or you could spend a day plus gluing and screwing.
