I don’t think anyone is arguing that we ALL need to live in ‘urban cores,’ but if someone were making that argument, I would probably agree with you. I think, as you’ve stated before, that variety and choice is key.
Transportation enabled suburbia is great if adequate (economical) transportation is available and there still are ‘urban cores’ for…[Read more]

I admittedly just skimmed, so sorry if you mentioned this, but I don’t think it’s so much the mid-century suburbs that planners and archs detest so much as the trend over the last twenty years or so.
Alot of the suburban neighborhoods planned post WW2 through to about the 70’s/80’s have gridded/narrower streets, smaller more compact homes and a…[Read more]

I just wanted to add that I think healthcare is actually an important component to economic sustainability and regrowth.
It’s a complicated topic that we probably dont want to delve into here, but afterrunning into some health complications over the past few weeks the issue has really hit home with me.
Quick Points/We need:
-Comprehensive…[Read more]

I might argue that it’s not so much about our corporate tax policy as it is our trade policies and the fact that China has much more lax labor laws than the US, particularly with regard to the manufacturing industry.

I generally work in decimal for plan layout as most of the work is being done in conjunction with engineers/surveyors. Vertical construction I generally use architectural.

He draws a lot of people, but I really enjoy his technique and looseness.

Just got an email today from Colorado State University (free advertising)…
They are offering half tuition to in-state sudents this year and no tuition for students that are eligible for Pell Grants. They mentioned that they are 1 of 4 (If I remember) schools in the nation doing this.
Kind of makes me wish I waited to go back to school!

My initial impression is that the blueprint background is a bit distracting. Also, using old style blueprinting can mean a number of different things to the reader in my opinion. One interpretation might be that the author is out of touch with current practice, while another may be that they are very well practiced, paying homage to the days of…[Read more]

Not to make light of your situation, but welcome to student loan slavery Cody. I believe most federal subsidized loans have a ‘grace period’ of at least 6 months. In this economy you may very well be able to extend this for you. If not, you can certainly claim economic hardship/forebearance to get you through the time between while gaining…[Read more]

With that said, the office I’m in at the moment is quite busy.
As much as I complain about the small projects and smaller design fees sometimes, we stay busy because we’re local and work with local developers and consultants. I can’t say the same for some of the larger firms in the region.
When I was in school I almost forgot that not every firm…[Read more]

Okay, after actually looking at it and watching the video I like it with some caveats–The scale seems a little excessively large like it would be a chore to walk across, but I guess that’s the difference between art and design–you don’t need to think about things like comfort and usability, which is refreshing. If the entire wor d were…[Read more]

I don’t necessarily think your role in the design process changes in the flip of a switch as you become a licensed ‘Landscape Architect.’ Good designers also think about constructability, but certainly with a lesser sense of responsibility. Passage of the LARE in the United States by definition makes you legally entitled and qualified to call…[Read more]

I get that, but how does LARE help define the profession in other countries? Certainly, we would all agree that landscape architecture is practiced at the same level of proficiency as it is here, across the globe. What was landscape architecture before CLARB?
I get you point and agree. If we’re only looking for a nationally (sort of) legal…[Read more]

Ok, so what is your point, Jason?
Experince + education + exam in most states that I know of = license. My point is that the exam doesn’t test for the less tangible aspects of a landscape archs expertise and experience, so simply defining the practice and craft by one’s ability to earn licensure seems a little silly… though still perfectly…[Read more]
