From Wikipedia:
Architecture (Latin architectura, from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων – arkhitekton, from ἀρχι- “chief” and τέκτων “builder, carpenter”) can mean:
The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures.
The practice of an architect, where architecture means to offer or render professional services i…[Read more] -

I think it’s cool to learn 3D programs like Max and Maya in school, but think it’s kind of a waste of studio time to ‘teach’ to it after looking back a little over a year out of school.
Several reasons:
1) The more intensive the 3D program, the less time there will be allocated to thinking about design (ie fundamental design).
I would liken the…[Read more]

In my very humble opinion, there is more opportunity to be taken advantage of by learning how to think and draw than there is being a 3D modeler.
Sure, I feel a little taken advantage of lately being given 4 hours to plan an office park, but I wouldn’t have any opportunity to practice if all I could do was make really radical 3D models. I think…[Read more]

Great interview , Craig. Thanks for sharing this.
I was partcularly struck by the notion of ‘hypernature’ (can’t recall the term Urbanski uses) as a design language which communicates natural circumstances in an urban context. I can see this process in a lot of MVVA’s work and appreciate the seemingly fundamental application of basic landscape…[Read more]

My long reply went poof, maybe for the better.
Tough question and I’m curious to read what others write.
I’m not sure I could really define a single formula I follow–Sometimes the concept just reveals itself and sometimes its a battle and the only thing I can do is walk away and avoid the problem for a couple weeks.
I agree that it’s good to…[Read more]

Wow, thanks for the complement Cody.
I didn’t realize the CSU program wasn’t accredited. I think it will probably develop into a strong program.
Good luck and feel free to ask me if you have any specific questions about Denver. I come from a design-build background as well so I have an idea of where you’re coming from. Talk to you soon..

I can’t speak to the reputation of UCD in particular as I went to CSU in Fort Collins, but I can tell you a little about the region as I live in Denver and work just outside the city.
I’ve been living along the Front Range for almost ten years from Boulder, to Fort Collins, and now Denver. The lifestyle is tough to beat if you like the mountains…[Read more]

That makes sense, and sorry we keep rehashing this argument.
What I’m interpreting from your post is that LA’s are very unlikely prime consultants in the development world?
We lead entitlement projects, parks, and site planning, etc. Whether we have the largest scope is another discussion, but it’s not uncommon for us to hire and lead…[Read more]

Hiring managers are emotional creatures too. My boss has outbursts and streaks of obnoxious behavior and so so I. We deal with it. He purportedly knew when he hired me that our personalities were vastly different, but he hired me because I produce lots of work and I have the ability to learn.
Frankly, I find it refreshing when someone in the…[Read more]

I don’t think you should try to censor yourself so much in the future, at least not for the sake of Land8. I think a little argument and heated debate is good for everyone, though so me of the comments lately have gone a little too far.
I think there are a lot of folks out there, unemployed or otherwise, that feel a strong sense of entitlement…[Read more]

Thanks Franklin.
I didn’t intend to scold you for using the discussion forum, but to point out that there have been several discussions started on the topic of working in Asia, so I thought it may be an opportune time for someone on the inside to demystify the scenario.
Thanks for the candid responses. One question I would like to ask at this…[Read more]

Franklin,
I appreciate your offer to the Land8 Members, myself included. There is also a Job Board here which many of us check daily where you can list details about any opportunities you may have for employment and information about your firm and the type of candidate you’re looking for.
Personally, I am particularly interested in what is…[Read more]

So you’re saying that landscape contractors, architects and engineers can generally do a passable job at landscape architecture?
If so, I really wish I could take back the last ten years.

From my very limited experience and humble experience working in a two-person office I have come to believe there is only one way of true advancement within a firm–bringing in work.
I think there will always be room for small raises with added responsibility, dedication, and workmanship, but true advancement comes when you bring in new clients…[Read more]
