  • Here’s an older site plan rendering I did a couple months ago. Some of the planting and hardscape changed, but the concept is basically the same. I had A LOT of trouble finding good school site plan examples. I found a website called designshare that has a case studies section on sustainable schools. That was slightly helpful.

    We designed…[Read more]

  • Good Topic, I featured this for more traffic, hopefully.

  • Hey Glenn,

I think you’re talking about starting a residential design-build, in which case, realistically, your first few clients at least will be on the smaller scale. Taking that into consideration, I wouldn’t overcomplicate the situation.

Before I went back to school at CSU I worked in design-build, eventually starting my own ‘pickup truck…[Read more]

  • I generally agree.

As a study this is interesting, but probably impractical for a number of reasons. Is this another criterion for quantifying good neighborhood design? I get it, but I think the true key to walkability is context sensitive/site-responsive design. Different patterns of walkability or drivability are going to occur in different…[Read more]

    @Rob H.

I agree for the most part with what you’re saying, but also think this is a as much if not more a socio-political problem as it is a design and engineering one. It doesn’t seem like there is much we could do if no one would be willing to implement potential solutions.

Putting that discussion aside, I think it would be in our best…[Read more]

I think the point was to deincentivize BP from (and this is conjecture on my part I think) trying to preserve the well instead of their first priority being protecting the asset.

  • nca replied to the topic Gulf Oil Spill in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 5 months ago

I think the answer (not that there is ONE answer), but one of many solutions perhaps may be the integration of supply and demand in terms of alternatives sources like solar, ie rooftop panels with community to community integrated power supply stations like batteries to store power for each neighborhood or community. Something to that degree seems…[Read more]

    Okay.

‘Stupid’? I don’t think so. ‘Unenlightened,’ perhaps.

I appreciate your point Rob, but I don’t think we’re dealing with generally stupid people or necessarily unenlightened people. In fact, I have more confidence in the notion that private corporations such as BP tend to attract the best and brightest in some for or another, be it workers…[Read more]

    I agree.

It seems like all the solutions related to permanently disbling the well have been dismissed by speculative science (or actual science if that makes sense). I also agree with the comment about revocation of permits.

  • nca replied to the topic Gulf Oil Spill in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 5 months ago

Prof Erschagi’s replies seem to be just as speculative and as or less scientific as the proposals. I understand the need for brevity.

Why not use a combination of proposed solutions?–freeze the well with methane ice as one suggested, then install transport device (clamped pipe, whatever) while the flow is down. I’m sure no one thought of this,…[Read more]

Right, but at what point does it make sense for a company to sacrifice production in lieu of pending damage costs to write off losses?

I know this is conspiracy theory-ish as John Turk put it this morning on am760, but when he said it I burst out loud, ‘yes!.’

Given, it makes far more sense for BP to be collecting oil, making a straight profit…[Read more]

    Hey,

    I’m just typing out loud.

Certainly thy didnt want the explosion and leak to happen in the first place, but could there be some financial incentive for them to postpone containment other than bureaucracy and incompetence? I’m under the presumption that private industry tends to be very efficient when it comes to time or money–It doesnt…[Read more]

I think I just had the same thought below Andrew.

It seems so simple doesnt it? Just like coupling an irrigation leak. I thought the pipe could be corrugated with some flex and several times the diameter as to help alleviate the pressure. The end could be a mechanically/robotically sealable coupling end with rubber-like flexible fitting to…[Read more]

I saw this video a couple weeks ago and thought, ‘well, how will we collect the hay?’ without giving it much thought, then I saw the comment about the netted hay. I hope there’s at least one school studio working on shore cleanup/oil mitigation projects.

It seems logical enough to build a perimeter around the slick or along potentially affected…[Read more]

One more thing about Christo and the oil images–

My analysis, and an admitted amateur one at that, is that both the photographs of the oil and the Christo work is for the viewer terribly ironic. The juxtaposition of the viceral beauty and the pending destruction. The christo and jean-claude work is ironic also in the same way while touching on…[Read more]

    Thanks.

Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate the attitude and snarkiness, but I want to encourage more people to contribute. I dont think we have a large and dedicated community here yet to afford scaring people away with poli-talk and straight out ego-bashing.

Feel free to pick on me all you want. I need the practice.

I didn’t say anything about your ideas Trace. You have a vivid imagination, thanks for sharing!

My only point is that this is a forum for design ideas and discussion and I’d like to hear or see more (ideas and discussion). I’m fine with unsolicited criticism, just please keep it constructive and tactful.

  • nca replied to the topic Gulf Oil Spill in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 5 months ago

what’s the point you’re trying to make here?

I can delete as fast as you can post.

  • nca replied to the topic Gulf Oil Spill in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 5 months ago

    Mike,

I would have liked to see your entire post before you edited. I’ve been listening to NPR at work and have heard some of the kooky ideas some callers have presented. Oddly enough, BP was evidently already working on them at the time, lol.

  • nca replied to the topic Gulf Oil Spill in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 5 months ago

Nice design Tom. Good work getting after it and doing something. Did you send your sketch to BP? It kind of looks like ‘Top Hat’…or doesn’t it?

I’m going to re-tag this discussion as ‘BP Oil Spill Concepts’ and see if we can get some google hits, lol.

I’d like to see some more sketches from anyone else..
