Hey Chris,
I went back and looked here : http://www.dora.state.co.us/la/Statute.pdf
and couldn’t find the passage that I read a year ago, so I stand corrected. I was shocked to at the time to find that ANY undergrad degree plus experience would suffice. Guess I misread.

Maybe you’re confusing me or I’m just confusing myself but typically to earn LA licensure one only needs a bachelors or masters degree (in CO its ANY degree which is ludicrous) PLUS two years under a licensed landscape architect. With your architecture education plus two years experience I’m thinking thats all you need to sit. Sorry if I’m…[Read more]

Why is it that a marketing major can go find a successful career in nearly any OTHER field than marketing after graduation and be happy, but arch/la grads see it as ‘survival job’ vs. traditional career path?
Get a design degree, take those skills and go write/change policy…sheesh.

Anecdotal..
I’m basing it on my experience over the last ten years. When I started in landscape I was a contractor in 2001 and finding work was EASY.
In 2005 I started at CSU and worked for bigger LA firms when things started going downhill.
2009 I struggled to find work, but got lucky and stayed employed though 85% plus of my colleagues did…[Read more]

Architecture? Really? Dude, if you’re going for a design degree I’d stay away from graphic design and architecture for a while…but thats the last time I’ll say it..shhh 😉
I’d follow someones earlier comment and consider civil or mechanical. If I had to do it all over again I’d probably do LA..again, but if I were smart I’d probably check out…[Read more]

Its not going to bounce back in 4 years, or even 10 in my opinion. The game has changed and the profession needs to adapt and its going to take a while. The average LA student probably isnt going to find a sustainable career in traditional practice in the coming years. Nursing isn’t looking to good anymore either.
We just need to change the way…[Read more]

IMO an architecture/landscape architecture major may very well be one of the most challenging degrees a student can pursue with limitless career opportunities after graduation. The analytical thinking, technical, and communications skills typically learned in a design program are invaluable in the real world and I believe we need more people with…[Read more]

The art and architecture world are not that unlike.
We cry about being poor, starving geniuses, then stick our noses up at anyone actually delivering a marketable product because they found a formula to appeal to the ‘masses.’
This economy is going to change that.

All the critique aside, some of which I think is valid, you’ve got to give the man credit for a) being a marketing genius and b) bringing art to people who typically think they dont care about art….oh yeah and c) making cool paintings.

I’ve admired his work for a few years now. We had a gallery of his work not far from where we lived in Denver. Too young..

I was thinking of some sort of ‘subsurface channel’ sort of like masonry wall ties and/or establishing the planting before installing on the finished structure, maybe even a subsurface wire mesh, sound like a good plan?

I have been working solely from home for an office 4.5 hours from me for going on 2 years now. I worked in the office for about a year, but have been up in the high rockies since 2010.
We share files via ftp that I setup on our network a little over a year ago. Before that we used a vpn but it was slow, glitchy, and unreliable. Now we either just…[Read more]

This ‘degree’ is essentially the same as taking a year of liberal arts in the eye of CLARB. Its nearly useless in terms of licensure reqs and misleading..shame on merritt college.

The course description is misleading at best. How many contractors do you think will sign up for this course only to realize they cant sit for the LARE without another 3 years minmum education plus work experience? This is the problem with for-profit community colleges.
To be clear I dont think this course will qualify you to sit for the exam,…[Read more]
