Hi Thomas,
As I understand it the one thing the Revit has no provisions to deal with is Curbs. And what about all of the civil stuff? That is still handled beter in AutoCad than anywhere else. Regardless of Autodesk’s desire for you to go and spend twice the money for Civil3D.

Unfortunately that negates the whole idea of BIM to Start with. The whole point of BIM is place 3d componet design items in the Model and attach all the related database info to it. How can you accomplish that if you don’t have a 3d plant model for every plant used in BIM? It would be like building a multistory high rise and substituting 2x…[Read more]

Just 40 hours? EEK! You obviously aren’t running your own firm. If you own your own company and you are just putting in 40 hours you probably won’t own it long… 40 hrs is for sissys! HA!

Hi Thomas,
I agree that SketchUP is getting close but it is not quite there yet for some tasks. The biggest issue I see with BIM (except from the way you describe it… it sounds like it will do everything including kiss my wife good nite for me. 🙂 just kidding of course. No seriously, who is going to create all of the 3d plant materi…[Read more] -

Believe me, if I could do it all in SketchUP Pro I would! The problem is that for Construction Drawings and Deliverables and for importing Civil Data from Survey Instruments, SketchUP is not your best tool. It lacks the 2d CAD capablilities of a standard CAD package. It is getting better though. BricsCAD (or -let me hold my nose here- Auto…[Read more]

I don’t think CAD makes for a good rendering product to begin with. I use Cad to import my land surveys(Carlson SurvCE, and Carlson Survey desktop 2010, and produce my Construction Drawings and Deliverables with BricsCAD and LandFX (LandFX is much easier to set tree shadows anyway. I use SketchUP Pro for all my 3d Modeling and perspective w…[Read more]

I agree absolutly! Andrew. I think I would rather learn sketchup now (if I was starting over) rather than Autocad! I have to hold my nose when talking about Autodesk products in general. Not intiuitive, Expensive! And over rated!

as far as you know… Autodesk Impressions should work if you can save the civil3d file in dxf or dwg format. And you should be able to call the dxf or dwg up in Impressions and save it to a new file name leaving your precision drawing untouched. Remember Impressions is designed to be used as a presentation tool.

See my discussion “Land FX plug-in for Sketchup” When I was talking with Stephanie I included a typical work flow.
Hope this helps!

Did I say anything that was not correct Thomas?
Answer: no
It’s an iphone phenomenon actually. Apple has their users so brain washed that they would rather buy an app rather than use the apps that are built in to the phone. It kind of reminds me of people who would rather buy bottled water rather than drink it out of the tap. -

VectorWorks is not new to the Mac is it Andrew? He sounds like he is talking about AutoCAD for the Mac. It is the only recent addition that I am aware of.

I see BIM meeting a wall in Landscape Design. Because there are so many different plants. We all have trouble designing and rendering realistic looking 3D plant models now. BIM will make this issue an even bigger problem. Until someone steps up to the plate with an elegant solution I see landscape design participating only on the fringes of…[Read more]

I use BricsCAD (autocad clone) and LandFX and SketchUP Pro (All PC) Autodesk recently released Autocad for the Mac but It has a lot of catching up to do to be on par with the PC platform. The PC paltform is till the platform of choice for most desigers.
