It sounds like what we called, when I was in school (graduated in 1987, Chris, perhaps pre-date this verbiage fashion..), “Reading Landscapes” the whole process taken from the book “Reading the Landscapes of America” by May Theilgard Watts..Great book..

Baltimore Harbor Waterfront Revitalization is a famous case study of successful design. Camden New Jersey, on the other hand, is unsuccessful..there are dozens of examples, though, just google “Waterfront Revitalization Projects” and start to read!

How about a mix of community gardens and Sculpture gardens that use the ruins to commemorate the past? In the 19 th century the British were big on building artificial ruins in their gardens – perhaps since you have the ruins you can turn what is around them into gardens (vegetables, fruit trees?) owned by the community, but leave the ruins and…[Read more]

Ramzi, I grew up in Beirut in the sixties and seventies, before the serious pollution problems existed. I used to walk through AUB every day, although I understand the Landscape department is out in the Bekaa?
Anyway, how about making your design focus more on ‘sustainablity’ by building some natural systems on the waters edge that clean po…[Read more] -

Katsura is good in Modesto, Henry..Cercis canadensis out here are Cercis Occidentalis, and they somehow have none of the charm of our east coast redbud, IMHO..They are tough-looking where our redbud is so delicate and beautiful..Same flower color, but it is the dry toughness that I dislike, whereas the east coast is a graceful delicate plant that…[Read more]

How about Katsura’s – I love them, they have a beautiful form, beautiful leaf, they can be pruned nicely to fit the tight spot as they grow, and they are pretty tough, hard to kill..
I also like Gingkos, but bosc’s of Gingkos is from the Seventies, IMHO, and makes it look seventies!

p.s., the comment on spelling was directed at Mr. Radish, actually, Andrew, but you can own it if you want..
More on-topic, the construction of this EPA site is old news to me – many of the workers wrote in some huge comment site about various different aspects to the design that were good or bad, they all had lots of opinions..
I agree, tho, t…[Read more] -

Craig, yes, I see what you are saying..I removed the post because sequentially it seemed lost, in the thread. Your perspective def. adds to thoughts on oppression.

Jon, I am sure you didn’t mean it, but to imply that some category of people you call ‘middle class whites’ are ignorant of predjudice, unequal economic systems, and institutionalization of greed is pretty simplistic..Almost all immigrants to the US faced predjudice, either in their home country or when they got here to america. It does seem like we need a more subtle definition than just ‘capitalism’ to convey a more accurate agenda for social change.. Our society is not solely capitalistic, nor is it the concept of buying and selling that we (liberals) object to…completely…

I would contact a public relations person at State Department – they have had to retrofit hundreds of embassies and consulates throughout the world for defense, since the eighties, specifically since the Beirut bombing in 1983, and they have an active program for Embassy retrofitting for defense – in fact, this is one place to look for a job, if…[Read more]
