I think the ASLA is somehow very non-user friendly, and am currently a member of an Engineering Union, which has garnered LA’s in my office significantly higher pay..
I am all in favor of unions..My grandma was an ILGWU seamstress..
Good luck I will sign the petition, or whatever you want.. -

I would spend the money on seeds and fencing and soil improvement behind the fences..Dogs and plants do not go together..My landlady had a successfu plant/animal garden because she had fenced off all her plants with salvaged wrought iron fencing, about 2-3′ h igh, and all that could be accessed by the dogs were paths through the garden, with the…[Read more]

I geuss I have to re-iterate my point that ‘fun design’ is ultimately just good design – all the fireworks are not needed..The difference between a tiresome staircase with 6-7″ risers and 12″ treads, and a ‘fun’ 2″ riser with 3′ treads – that is good design versus boring design..Yes, one has to fit the space…But you do not need an electronic…[Read more]

It’s a very good topic – I love the piano steps..but why is not Olmsted’s Prospect Park, that paragon of democratic values and passive recreation in the landscape, not part of the ‘fun theory’…? Or is it..
I do not know any other examples, but I am going to strong- arm my fellow LA’s to consider it in their designs..As long as not too…[Read more] -

thanks, Nick, good one! Poor andrew spierling must see it all over and over – I didn’t realize a discussion on this had already occurred in February of this year, and there is a network site on Landscape Jokes also, under Networking…oh, well, seemed like a good idea..
My favorite joke is the one about whether god is a civil engineer, an…[Read more]

2.sorry, you sounded pretty bitter to me, and I was merely agreeing with the frustration of being a planner. I personally found it to be a really thankless job, for the most part..
1.And I was drawing up the plans in advance of their submission for these guys, so it was sort of fun as a new LA for me, so asa a planner, I was drawing up site plans…[Read more]

I used to meet with the developers and draw up their site plan for them on trace, nrschmid, as well as their (natives only – my choice..) landscape plans – they would thank me..it was way out in the sticks..But you do sound like the normal extremely bitter planner… planning is extremely frustrating, and thankless….Nothing like a Planning Board…[Read more]

And of course, as has been mentioned in these forums often before, definitely check planning jobs – LA is directly applicable, no registration required, and some of them can be even somewhat interesting, although as a planner one has to be political and reticent as to ones own opinions..
But one does get to review a lot of stuff going on, and in…[Read more] -

The only thing that has ever worked for me is just plain dumbass luck – the right place at the right time..it helps to be really good looking, but I have not been able to take advantage of that..that is all! I would apply for jobs in China or Dubai..seems like the onlyl sure thing to me, right now..

If that drainage pattern is correctly depicted by your arrows, it is not legal and should be flagged by the site inspector prior to issuing a C.O. on the building. You cannot dump all your water into street. It this located somewhere where it never rains, so they don’t relaly care?

I would be interested in knowing what Brents take on the U of Arizona Masters is like – do they have a particular ‘bent’ ? I gave a paper at the CELA conference in Tuscon this year and the Uof Arizona people, as far as I was concerned, really stood out as being very good scholars…How did you like U of Arizona?

true, Andrew, functionality does not define style, completely, – it is still most important for me, in considering whether a design is good or not.
Lets see – the style to my highway landscapes..hee hee..definitely not decorative – I go for complete seventies xeriscape, with early seventies concrete modern detailing..
hows that?
but I do like to…[Read more] -

He actually has designed some incredibly lovely gardens/pools right up close to the house – plus his steps in the landscape – no, he has altered the landscape around his houses..I am thinking of one in particular, a gorgeous rendering of a pool with steps in the crook of a gorgeous house – big flat planter pots gracing the steps of the pool space…[Read more]
