I like functional first – I like the garden/park to function, to be based on circulation. I dislike ornamental plantings. I think color and texture in a garden can usually be almost completely ignored – they change with the seasons..I dislike gardens that think too much about plant color and texture..And I like the late 19th century garden…[Read more]

I work for state DOT, and we have had to move people to other departments, stormwater or construction, due to cutbacks on projects…sorry, no info on private organizations..and we are all happy to still have our jobs, even with mandatory furloughs!

I think my particular Master’s degree was more practical than I realized at the time…We had two years of engineering, just doing the designs with the learning coming with getting the work done, a year of soils, a year of geology, as well as putting together specs, as part of engineering..It was all done through design work, though, which I think…[Read more]

I have to speak up for the Master’s degree in LA, which seems underrepresented here. I have a Master’s from U of Pennsylvania, and it was an incredible experience – the studio masters were some of the most interesting people (and famous) I have met (some weren’t, that is true..). The interaction with architects in joint studios, as well as with…[Read more]

the batter of a wall. (hee hee!~) footings is a funny word, really..eyelid dormer..friable soil..most of the construction words are fairly silly, when you think about it – rebars, brushed aggregate, vanishing edge, dbh or at the ‘flange’, drip-line, tip die-back, soil horizons, flemish bond (-age – just kidding!), pierced wall,
how’s that for a…[Read more]
