Latest News in Landscape Architecture

The 2015 Festival of Landscape Architecture, ‘This Public Life,’ will be held in Melbourne, Australia, October 10th to 20th. The festival combines a conference and research summit, self-guided tours, design competitions, exhibitions, installations, screenings and talks, many of which are FREE and open to the public (registration required for all events). The University of Arkansas Community Design Center’s project Fayetteville 2030: Food City Scenario has won a 2015 Honor Award in the Analysis and Planning category from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Food City Scenario is an urban agricultural project that aims to weave agricultural urbanism back into the city environment, with the prospect of helping Fayetteville achieve greater food security and resiliency, said Steve Luoni, director of the Community Design Center and a Distinguished Professor. Four design proposals for the redevelopment of Toronoto St George Campus have been published online for public comment. The four design teams are:

  • KPMB Architects + Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates + Urban Strategies
  • DTAH + Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates
  • PUBLIC WORK
  • Janet Rosenberg & Studio + architectsAlliance + ERA Architects

All plans and visualizations of the entrants can be viewed on the University Of Toronto’s website.

Chicago Riverwalk is a mile and a quarter cycle and pedestrian friendly route adjacent to the river frontage that, amongst other things aims to showcase the areas architecture. Gina Ford, Principle of Sasaki Associates (the lead design firm behind the landscape of Chicago Department of Transportation’s expansion of the city’s Riverwalk) says of landscape architecture “We always see Chicago on the outside as sort of a city of architects. For me the stress is really about how do we demonstrate to the Chicago architecture community the power of landscape architecture.” The project is due to open next year. Emergence: Nonlinear Ecologies of Future Airports is a graduate student project by Sarah Fayad that looks at the role airports play in ecology and pollution. Focusing specifically on the ecosystem of Badgerys Creek waterways as the second Sydney Airport emerges, she suggests that airports need not linear energy consumers, but could be net energy producers. Utilizing the invasive algae that has previously been seen only Fayad proposes that it is possible to produce biomass energy from waste.

US firm ArandaLasch has unveiled plans for an art park on terraced rice paddies in the Bali countryside close to Balinese capitol of Denpasar. The 161,000 square feet (15,000 square metres) park called Budidesa, which has been featured in the Chicago Architecture Biennial (3 October to 3 January 2016), will feature traditional terraced rice paddies and newly proposed contemporary buildings. –
